The Simpsons are a culture touchstone for most people who watched any TV in the last quarter century. For us 80s babies it was the hugest phenomenon of our youth... A prime time cartoon that was embraced by EVERYONE, old... young.... it didn't matter. Everyone was rocking Bartman shirts and chanting 'Eat My Shorts' and many of the other hundreds of quotes that Simpsons fans throw out at each other to this day. FXX is in the middle of an epic marathon that is showing all 500+ episodes in a row, in sequential order. So we at the CCD Podcast felt it was time to pay our respects, and the team we assembled to do it are some of the biggest Simpsons fans around. Jedi Rob is joined by Big Steve & Joey Esq as they take a trip down memory lane into Springfield. Dan Luvisi Takes Some Of Your Most Beloved Childhood Characters To A Very Dark Place...

Now I have seen a ton of 're-imaginings' and 're-designs' come and go on all sorts of characters. The usual suspects, like the Disney Princesses... the more obscure characters, like minor Marvel heroes. But it is very rare when you get an artist like Dan Luvisi, who not only re-designs some of the most recognizable characters of pop culture history, but also gives you a dope back story about the new characters. Luvisi does so over on his blog, and the stories are almost as wonderful as his insanely fantastic pictures. Imagine the cast of the Muppet show thrust into the movie worlds of No Country For Old Men and Drive. How about Homer Simpson being pushed into the world of Grand Theft Auto. But my personal fave has to be Wreck It Ralph jumping into a Street Fighter cabinet and taking up the mantle that Ryu has championed all this time. These are great... just great. Guillermo Del Toro Takes A Stab At The Simpsons Couch Gag In The 'Tree House of Horror: XXIV'

Guillermo del Toro is a Master of Horror. Actually, right now del Toro is THE Master of Horror. He is the man, and has been since his film debut in Cronos. So who better to script the Couch Gag (opening credit reel) for this years Simpsons Halloween episode, Tree House of Horror: XXIV. In the clip del Torro pays homage to all of his own films (love the nod to Cronos and Mimic in the supermarket!), horror films he loves (The Universal Movie Monsters chasing the villagers? Priceless...), and even finds time to pay homage to his favorite horror writers & directors (Stephen King, Poe, Alfred Hitchcock...). I really love the little nods he threw in:  Godzilla's bones underground, Blade hunting Mutant Vampire Homer, Cthulu terrorizing Springfield, and the scene that steals them all: Mr. Burns as The Pale Man! Great idea for my favorite character on the show... and he owns it!. Del Toro did a great job, and ideas like this are the reason why the Simpsons keep on keeping on after 26 seasons on TV! I look forward to another 26 years of The Simpsons. But for now, enjoy this del Toro masterpiece of an open after the jump...



  

The Simpsons: The Longest Daycare

I have been hearing about the Oscar nominated Simpsons short ''The Longest Daycare' for a few weeks now. I have yet to track it down, but thanks to my main man Jedi Rob Martin and his wonderful Facebook account I have remedied that situation. I love short films, especially animated one, because they can get a very cool message across in a relatively short amount of time and usually don't require massive funding to get off the ground. Some of the best sci-fi and animated movies of the past year started out as short films that were made to highlight just what a great idea could be. This is a great format to see a classic property like The Simpsons other than a typical 30 minute Sunday night episode, so I am all in. Check out the video after the jump...

CCD Links It Up - Vol #8

So many things to share with you guys today, and so little time... unless you are at work and are trying to pass the day without doing much. So here are some wacky & wild stories to get you through your Friday. The links are after the jump...



1) Check out these two Ukrainian broads who spend their lives physically altering their appearances to look like an Anime character & Barbie... while I find this preposterous and  can't believe those are real women in the pictures, I admit that I would probably bone both of them, albeit while watching over my shoulder for a random octopus tentacle looking for it's traditional Japanamation vaginal home....

2) The Simpsons have a running gag to start their show called "The Couch Gag" that has seen many inclinations over the years. The producers of the show have used this 5 seconds to give props & nods to all types of properties & various topics, but now it seems like they are out of ideas. So they need your help... and by clicking here you can submit your own idea for a "Couch Gag" that might be aired before thsi years season finale.

3) Now that James Gunn has been tapped to direct Guardians of the Galaxy for Marvel, frequent collaborator Michael Rooker is making his case publicly for the role of Rocket Raccoon. With his upcoming return in the third season of The Walking Dead, his close relationship with Gunn, and all his voice work experience Rooker might just be the man for the job. 4) Terry Richardson must be Lucifer incarnate, because there is no other way to explain why celebrity women act so reckless around him. This time the pervy photog has released a set of photos that feature a topless Lady Gaga visiting Donatella Versace. Great nips... but why do these chicks want to get naked for this doof???

5) I know the late 70s/early 80s were filled with tons of celebrities using Coke, but this disturbing picture of Carrie Fisher from the set of Return of the Jedi blew my mind.... 

Pulp Fiction: Springfield

CCD contributor and professional killer of time on the Internet (hehehe) Tommy Lombardozzi forwarded these awesome Simpson-ized Pulp Fiction character sketches. After first seeing his link to a BuzzFeed article, I did a little bit of digging and found even more of the photo set available over at Coffee & Cookies. The se sketches apparently were first shared on a website called Film Roman a long long time ago. Although I can't find out who the artist is, I feel comfortable giving credit to the above three sources. So know feel free to enjoy these pics. Great job Tommy... keep sending em over!!! Who Watches The Simpsons? by Chris Weiermiller

Every time I find out that one of my fellow geek friends has NOT read Watchmen I freak the fuck out and immediately try to get them my copy to read. Simply put, it is a right of passage that needs to be experienced by anyone who reads comics. As much as I think Alan Moore is a tool, he really killed this story and created some wonderful characters that have stuck with for over 20+ years. Another stallworth of the entertainment industry has been The Simpsons. I really haven't watched the show consistently over the past 10 years, but all I know is if you have 20+ years on the air you are doing something right. So of course it would be great to get these two properties together in a mashup by artist Chris Weiermiller. The character selection in a mashup is key, and Chris certainly nailed it with this piece. Lego Characters by Jung Von Matt

I came across these cool minimalist recreations of animated/children characters composed of Lego bricks by artist Jung Von Matt over at SuperPunch. I thought that the simpleness of them was very cool, and that they are easily identifiable despite the fact that they lack detail. You got the Ninja Turtles, The Simpsons, Bert & Ernie, and the cast of South Park. Check out all four of the pics after the jump...

Mad Magazine Asks: Who Said It? Mitch Romney or Mr. Burns???

While I often have an opinion whenever a political discussion occurs in my vicinity, I hardly ever use the hallowed pages of CCD to forward my own political agenda. It's just not fitting with the general tone of the blog (nothing against any blogs who do use their pages to promote political ideals). But when I came across this following info-graphic comparing the words of Mitt Romney to Mr. Burns from The Simpsons I almost fell the fuck over laughing. How great is this? This Romney character is such a crackpot that his own words could seem to have come from one of the most sarcastically & greed based written characters in TV history!!! Mad Magazine has certainly fell off in the past few years, but this is top tier stuff right here. Thanks to Cal from the Cave of Cool for unearthing this gem. Springfield Becomes Westeros, Burns Is King... Just Another Opening Scene On The Simpsons!!!

Can a homage get any better than this? Matt Groening and the crew over at The Simpson's used their opening credits to pay an homage to the HBO show "Game of Thrones" by recreating the map of Westeros used to introduce the HBO show, but subbing in Springfield's geography instead. This works so well, and you have to love Mr. Burns as Robert Baratheon... Check out the original Game of Thrones opening as well as   the Simpsons homage after the jump...
