The CCD Podcast: Episode #105 - Rogue One and The State of Star Wars

2016.... wow, what a year. We have seen monumental accomplishments in pop culture... Marvel movies and TV shows we never could have imagined seeing (Dr. Strange, Power Man), ratings that nerd shows can't believe (Game of Thrones, Westworld and the Walking Dead are some of the highest rated and most popular shows on TV), retro properties are hotter than ever (any thing from the 80s/80s that is re-released is sure to be a hit). Man, 2016 is certainly one of the best years to be alive and basking in the glory of the nerd-iverse! And what better way to wrap it all up in a sweet little bow then the FIRST EVER non saga Star Wars movie? Rogue One is here,... and we are EXCITED to discuss it, as well as what ramifications it's success will have on the whole Star Wars franchise! The CCD Podcast: Episode #100 - Is Wrestling Popular Again?

We tackle many pop culture topics here at CCD, but one that we tend to champion is Wrestling. Some of the greatest pop culture moments of the 80s & 90s happened in the squared circle... and for a while it seemed as if those moments would never again reach the heights they once did. Would this next generation of talented ring performers like Zack Ryder & Finn Balor ever reach the wildly popularity of Macho Man and Ricky Steamboat? Hmmmm..... yet it seems the "sport" of wrestling has seen quite an epic resurgence in the past year or so. Is it because the product is back to what it used to be... or is it because more of the old school fans are making their way back as they become parents and their kids start watching? All of these are part of the reason, but whatever you think the ultimate answer is simple: WRESTLING IS BACK!!!!

Jedi Rob sits down with CCD's wrestling experts, super fan Joey Armao and founder of the SRG Universe Steve Resk to talk about the current resurgence wrestling is experiencing. A perfect way to celebrate episode #100...

The CCD Podcast: Episode #99 - Howard the Duck: The 30th Anniversary Eggstravaganza!!!

Man o man... on paper, the film version of Howard the Duck should have been a home run! A hit comic character that was HAND PICKED by lord commander George Lucas for adaption... effects by Industrial Lights and Magic, the best in the biz... a huge cast, featuring 80s stalwarts like Lea Thompson, Tim Robbins and Jeffrey Jones... I mean, how could this go wrong??? I don't exactly know, but it certainly did go wrong. VERY WRONG. Widely considered one of the worst films ever created and a box office flop, HTD was relegated to the designation of "misstep" by George Lucas and crew. But over time, a cult following around the film began to build. It found new life on cable throughout the 90s and 2000s, and nowadays is considered one of the biggest cult classics of the 80s!

So with the 30th Anniversary rolling around, we felt like we should try to host an event highlighting this fun film. So we teamed up with Den of Geek to do just that... on 8/26/16 we will invade Dromedary Bar in Brooklyn for a crazy event. And because its us, we decided to host a podcast talking about everything Howard: comics, movies and beyond! Join Jedi Rob, Mike D and Joey Armao as they chop it up in the CCD Nerd Cave discussing Mr. H to the D baby...

The CCD Podcast: Episode #98 - Stranger Things....Best Show Ever?

Netflix has turned the nerd genre on its head with the under the radar release of the summer's biggest hit TV show, Stranger Things. The show comes to us from The Duffer Brothers, a pair of 80s babies who brought us The Hidden in 2015 (a gem of a film). This is what happens when kids who grew up in the 80's grow up... a show littered with references to TV, Film, Comics, and many other forms of childhood goodness that will be super recognizable to anyone between the ages of 30-45! It has the feel of vintage Spielberg at his finest, and people are literally tripping over themselves to recommend it to friends. But beyond the aesthetic, it is an A level TV show that can stand toe to toe with any other in character, script and quality production. Jedi Rob is joined by the lovely Alicia Gomes and resident 80s toy expert Joey Armao to delve into the series and ask the simple question:

Is STRANGER THINGS the greatest show ever made?

The CCD Podcast: Episode #84 - The Greatest Day to Be a Star Wars Fan

There are days in all people lives that stand out as moments that you can never forget... they are referred to as 'touchstones', an unforgettable mix of emotions that mere mention of causes you to be back at the moment instantly. I may only be 36, but I have a few of these moments. The minutes leading up to the screening of Return of the Jedi back in the day... watching Ghostbusters at Crossbay I with my pops, checking out the Phantom Menace with Sam down in Miami. these were all touchstone moments for me. And I am not sure, but I think I am about to have one again. As we stand here on the verge of the release of The Force Awakens, I am simply ready to be over-whelmed. I am eager to have these memories etched in my head forever. And this day... the last day BEFORE the movie comes out, will forever be remembered as "Star Wars Eve"! Check out Jedi Rob, Joe Esq and the lovely Ms. Alicia Gomes as they discuss their undying anticipation for the movie just one day before its release....

The CCD Podcast: Episode #60 - The WWE Mid-Year Review or "Hey Brooklyn... It's Summer Slam Time!"

One of the secret loves of the CCD crew is professional wrestling and all the drama that goes along with it.... it really is like a soap opera for males age 13-40! There is so much going on in the current WWE that we enlisted the help of wrestling lifers Joey Esq and Steve Resk to assist Jedi Rob Martin in an attempt to break down what the hell is going on right now followjng the Battleground PPV. They also talk about what they might expect to happen later on after the upcoming Summer Slam in Brooklyn NY. It is going to be one hell of a ride!

Wrestling played a huge role in most nerds lives back in the 70s/80s/90s and is still really popular today. The WWF/WWE, WCW, NWA, ECW and other organizations all gave us some memorable characters to cheer and jeer over the years. But some of those performers were lucky enough to expand their careers beyond the squared circle and branch out into acting... well, lets just say that they were in some movies (not much ACTING really taking place in most of these roles!). Some are no brainers, like Hulk Hogan in Rocky 3 or Jesse Ventura in Predator. But what about some of the others through the years? Another Excellent CCD Art & Supply Art Show In The Books... Here Are The Pieces!

On Saturday February 7th The CCD Art & Supply Co. put on our 2nd live art show at the Irish Haven in Brooklyn, and boy it was something special. The St. Valentine's Day Massacre: Mob Movies... In Blood Red was a perfect show theme to fit with this time of year. All that lovey dovey nonsense isn't our style here at CCD... we decided to pay homage to our favorite Mob movies in honor of the monstrous gangland slaying ordered by Al Capone. We picked out 16 artists, and the 16 classic mob movies. We put them in a randomizer... and after the assignments were given the rest was history. We got 16 killer (pun intended) pieces, and the night of the show we were fortunate enough to sell 14 out of 16 pieces. 14 OUT OF 16!!! That is just too dope... to dope indeed! It was a big night for The CCD Art & Supply Co. and we have made some insane connections with the hope of putting on even more killer events in the future.
