I'm Dreaming Of A Red Christmas: A Christmas Story of Fire & Ice by Anna Marie Jung & Andrew Bridgman

I always like the original comics over at Dorkly, but this might be one of the funniest ones I can remember seeing. George R.R. Martin may very well be the most beloved and hated man by the same people in the world... people adore his books and the HBO show based on it, yet hate him mercilessly for the excessive waiting that he puts people through in between books. People also seem to hate him for the uncanny ability he has to kill of seemingly main characters on a whim. This comic plays on both of those things, with a bit of a Christmas twist. A perfect wrap up of the holidays (see what I did there... holiday/wrap... I'm a genius). Make sure to check back to Dorkly's awesome comic pages often, and check out the full comic after the jump...

School Of Thrones - Episode 2 & 3

A few weeks back I posted the first episode of a very good web series entitled School of Thrones, which takes the characters of George R.R. Martin's Game of Thrones series and puts them in a high school setting like Beverly Hills 90210. The show has some excellent young actors and actresses in it, and they have two new episodes for you to enjoy up on their Youtube page.  The web series is super ironic and plays on all the things we love about Game of Thrones, so if you want to have a little bit of fun with your Westeros characters than make sure you watch all three. New episodes air every week on Sunday, so subscribe on their Youtube page so you don't miss a beat! Check out episode 2 & 3 after the jump....

'School of Thrones'- This Is Serious Business Ginger Stark!!!!

I love a good web series. I especially love a good web series that is a clever re-interpretation of a familiar franchise. Enter in 'School of Thrones', a new web series that uses the characters of George R.R. Martin's 'A Song of Ice & Fire' books & HBO's 'Game of Thrones' TV series and re-imagines them as current high school students. Instead of family clans, we have high school cliques. The Stark family always does things vintage (as in the old way), so of course they are the hipsters. The Targaryen's are outcasts, so of course Danaerys would be the artistic new girl. Renly is the homosexual cool kid, and Stannis is the religious zealot nerd loner... and of course the Greyjoy's are the swim team! And the Lannisters, lead by Bieber lookalike Joffrey, are the ruling family of the school. This series has so much potential... after all, Prom is Coming!!!!! I also want to point out just how hot young redhead Sansa is. Wowsers!!!! Click here to subscribe to the Youtube page of School of Thrones, and tune back in every Sunday at noon for the newest episodes. Great potential, great execution, and I for one will be looking forward to see what they do in the future...

And here are some character posters:

Death is Coming

Wow. Just wow. It is March, so that means it is almost time for the newest season of Game of Thrones. Ass we enter Season 3 we are promised one major plot point, and that is 'Death is Coming'. As someone who has read the books, this is an aptly pronounced theme for season 3 since every group of characters in the show experience major loss in this round of events. I'm not going to get into spoilers, but lets juts say nobody in the Westeros universe is really above death knocking on their door. HBO had released a teaser trailer about a month ago featuring the three eyed crow and the song The Rains of Castamere, but now we get a proper trailer with 1 minute worth of a sneak peek into the live footage. I'm in. Just a few more weeks ladies and gents... and then the dragons will fly!!!! BTW, Tyrion's scar looks properly awesome.Enjoy the trailer after the jump....

GRR vs JRR: Who's Characters Would Win In A Fight?

George R.R. Martin was a successful fantasy writer up until HBO made his A Song of Ice and Fire series a household name. Then he became uber famous, probably the most sought after author by new readers in the past few years. JRR Tolkien is the benchmark of all fantasy writers, having composed The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Tolkien is legendary, and Martin is well on his way (if he ever finished books 6 & 7!!!) to joining him on top of the pantheon of fantasy writers. So when MTV Geek decided to ask George what he thought about some of his characters facing off with the legends of Tolkien lore, and the results are quite interesting. The video is very funny and any opportunity I get to see Martin wearing that stupid hat and giggling into a camera I eat it up. Jaimie Lannister vs Aragon, Saruman vs Melisandre, Frodo vs Tyrion... the possibilities are endless. Good thing they kept Khal Drogo out of it, cause he would whup every bodies asses! Enjoy the video after the jump ...

Game Of Mushroom Kingdoms by Titan 413

Game of Thrones is at the height of its popularity due to the hit HBO TV series, and people are discovering George R. R. Martin's popular book series even more now. So how could you make it even cooler? Well, if you are artist Titan 413 you can simply Mario-ize it!!!! Check out this awesome map of Westeros done in the style of a Super Mario Brothers 3 map. This is awesome even if you don't know all the little ins and outs of Martin's world, but if you do it is even cooler. I love the land beyond The Wall & The Twins the best. Check out the full size image after the jump...

Black & Yellow: The Baratheon Edition

Parody videos are not always good, but when they have a clever concept and are executed effectively they can be epic. This is the case when it comes to Backflip Wilson's 'Black & yellow: The Baratheon Edition'. They take Wiz Khalifa's popular song that gave props to his hometown of Pittsburgh & flip it (see what I did there? Backflip Wilson "flipping" the track? Damn I'm good at this writing stuff!!!!) and use it to rain props down upon one of the more powerful houses in George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice & Fire series. Brothers Stannis, Renly, and Robert are all representing 'The Stag' hard body on this one, killing it with lines like "No Lions & Dragons... better refill my flagon". This is great fun for any fan of Game of Thrones. Enjoy the film after the jump.

Game of Thrones Travel Posters by Rogan Josh

Game of Thrones just wrapped up a stellar second season and is riding high on popularity right now. The original book series, 'A Song of Ice & Fire' by George R.R. Martin, is also enjoying a resurgence since people don't want to wait for the next few years to see how the show plays out on HBO. One of the coolest things about a geek property gaining ground and popularity is the sudden girth of creative interpretations of the property. These excellent 70's style travel posters for locations from the Game of Thrones universe is an excellent example of fringe ideas from a mainstream, property that are absolutely awesome. And honestly, I love that Rogan Josh chose some of the lesser known locations in the books/TV series. Well done all around... and even I would want to visit the Pyke & the rest of the Iron Islands based on that poster!!! Check out all three in the series after the jump...

Disney's Mother Of Dragons by Mona Collentine

I am in full force Game of Thrones mode lately.... I have a couple of pages left in Book #3, Season 2 of the show is wrapping up next week, and I just ordered a book called "Beyond The Wall" which is a collection of essays about George R.R. Martin's seminal book series. So when I was over at my boy Jeremy Barker's Popped Culture website and I saw this awesome Daenerys mash-up featuring some of the Disney dragons (Figment, Elliot, and Maleficent) I knew I just had to post it. You can see more of artist Mona Collentine stuff by clicking here and can view the full sized version of the pic after the jump....

A Game of Groans: A Rant by Joe Esq

I tend not to consider myself the typical geek. I AM a geek, no question about it... I can quote Star Wars verbatim, I have an encylclopedic knowledge of 80's toys, TV, movies and music, and I love comic books and wrestling. But I tend to downplay that aspect of my personality to all but those who really know me. I try to stay well rounded and not let my geekiness dominate my personality. And lets face it, when I say I'm not typical, I mean I'm also in great shape, have an active, healthy social life, and girls absolutely ADORE me (no really, they DO). If you were casting the role of a geeky character in a movie, he certainly wouldn't look or act like me, that's for sue. And I admit, I do tend to keep my geeky tendencies a bit closeted sometimes on purpose, because other geeks freak me out a little. I'm also a lawyer, and sometimes, just for fun, I like to take a less popular stance just for the joy of arguing it (and also because being a nudge and pushing people's buttons amuses the hell outta me). So its with a great level of discomfort that I'm forced to say unequivocally that I HATE this season of Game of Thrones. And I hate that I do. I want to love this show. I want to keep giving it the benefit of the doubt because its presenting a genre I love in a medium where more people will see and appreciate it and most of all, I don't want to be the typical geek ranting abouthow STUPID HBO IS WRECKING EVERYTHING HOW DARE THEY CHANGE MY BELOVED NERD NOVELS ROOAAAARRHULKSMASH!! But the fact remains, the writers are just changing too much stuff from the source material and over the course of this season its had an absolutely jarring effect, tearing me right out watching the show and taking a wrecking ball to my ability to enjoy it.

Be forewarned, there are heavy spoilers ahead. Well, for the novels anyway. Lord knows what the producers of the show have planned, but its starting to become obvious to me that TV series is slowly becoming "based on the novels by George R R. Martin" the same way Ghostbusters was based on the 70's TV series with the gorilla.

Click after the jump for more...

Before I dive into this, let me just say that I thought the first season of the show was amazing. It was an absolutely incredible adaptation. Maybe the greatest adaptation from book to screen ever. It cut out a lot of the excess, pared down plot lines and characters where necessary, and told a story that stayed true to the spirit of the source material. And to the story too, for the most part. Sure, much was lost to the realities of shooting a live action TV show on a limited budget. Subtext, background information and in some cases even whole plotlines had to be sacrificed in order to make the show work. But even when stuff was changed, it was minimal, it made sense, and it furthered the story. The story Martin told in the novels. This was helped by the fact that the producers did a phenomenal job casting the show. The portrayals by everyone was pretty much spot-on, the level of performance by all the players was top notch, and nothing I say here should be considered a knock on any of the actors, because for the most part I think the cast has been superb. Unfortunately, no amount of scene stealing has been enough to distract me from the weird, nonsensical and largely unneccesary changes we've been subjected to in Season 2 thus far. I kept grinning and bearing it, but last night was the straw that broke the camel's back for me and no matter how much they reign it in, this story will never be the story Martin told in the novels, because the characters are now damaged.

The main focus of my geek rage is last night's Jamie portion of the story. They basically contrived a scene where Jamie kills Karstark's kid when that's something that happened "off screen" in the novels and could just as easily have been "off screen" on the show. In the books, Karstark's sons died protecting Robb from Jamie in Whispering Wood. This is mentioned offhand early on, and brought up again later when Karstark wants Robb to let him kill Jamie for it. Instead of doing this just as simply on the show, they invent a scene where Jamie kills Torhen Karstark (as well as his own distant cousin - but not before having a fun little heart to heart about tournaments and being sixteen again) while trying to escape captivity. The big problem with this is that at this point, they're supposed to be laying the groundwork to make Jamie more sympathetic. In the novels, Martin does the impossible, he makes you start to relate to the incestuous Kingslayer; almost against your will. The guy who chucked Bran Stark out the window and crippled him becomes almost likeable! One of the keys to this (the fact that he fucks his sister aside)  is we are shown that, in his head, Jamie has tried to act honorably while essentially being brought up as a pawn in a game of oneupsmanship between his father and Aerys. So when he killed the Karstark kids in battle, it wasn't a dishonorable thing. When he slew the mad king, it was to save King's Landing from Aerys planning to immolate everyone. In the show Jamie' s just a jokey, arrogant asshole. Incredibly well played, and one of my favorite characters on the show, but after last night Nikolaj Coster-Waldau isn't really playing the Jamie of the novels. And I'm not even saying the Jamie of the novel WOULDN'T have done just what he did in the show, but they're sacrificing important character beats with no upside to it.

Who will love me now?

Another thing that bothered me about the whole scene is that on a show where budget concerns are so crucial to everything they do (or so we're told everytime some internet nerd complains about some minor change they made) why change the story to a point where they now have to hire actors to play Torhen Karstark and the Lannister cousin Jamie kills when you could leave the story the same and accomplish the same result (dead Karstark kids, Caitlin deciding to free Jamie as an indirect result).
I was also really bothered by the ending because I have to wonder, did anyone who hasn't read the novels believe for a second that those two bodies at the end were Bran and Rickon? They couldn't have, when twenty minutes earlier the writers made sure to have Bran and Rickon hamfistedly point out that "look I know that farm! There are two orphan boys from Winterfell living there! They're our age and look just like us - especially if they're all burnt up!" I really hate it when the plot turns into a sledgehammer, and that's exactly what happened there.

So these two kids would make perfect body doubles for you two? Funny you should bring that up...

Jon Snow's character and his relationship with Ygritte has been pretty much massacred too. The most important part of their first encounter, and why she ends up falling for him, why she vouches for him with the Wildlings later, is HE SPARED HER LIFE AND LET HER GO. Not, she escaped, and then was comically pursued by Jon. Not, they somehow got lost and the other RANGERS of the Night's Watch were unable to TRACK THEM ACROSS SNOW uh, for some reason. And certainly not he got himself captured. Being forced to kill Halfhand and join the Wildlings and sleep with Ygritte as part of doing his duty are essential parts of Jon's character in the books. And that aspect, that depth, is just gone from the character in the show. Gone. And its not coming back. Not without more contrived, hamfisted changes anyway.
Finally, while I admit, the scenes between Tywin and Arya have been superbly acted by Charles Dance and Maise Williams (and were even entertaining when I was able to detach myself from the novels), the scenes also beg the question, WHY THE FUCK ARE THEY HUMANIZING TYWIN LANNISTER? The man is an an asshole! An irredeemable prick of an asshole. He shouldn't be having tender moments with Ned Stark's daughter, or anyone else!

Oh wait, that finally was premature, because I really kind of hate that they explicitly showed Stannis fucking Melisandre instead of keeping it vague, I hate that they replaced Jeyne Westerling with some made up chick from Volantis (even though the actress playing her is fucking stunning) and I hate that pretty much Danerys's entire storyline from the Red Waste and Qarth is nothing like the book. The Qarth in the books is like something out of a fairy tale. What the show gave us is fucking boring, up to and including the part where Emperor Palpatine and his clones kidnap the dragons. Oh yeah, and as Mike D pointed out, no Jojen and Meera Reed = Epic Fail.

So there you go, a geeky rant from a guy who likes to pretend he's not a geek. I'm interested to know what people think. Debate me even. Convince me I'm wrong. Please! I want to love this show again like I did last year. Oh, and just to end on a positive note, I will say that the dragons look pretty kick ass.

Also, Brienne is precisely this ugly. Good job guys.

JoeyEsq can be found regularly trying to convince you all he's not a geek on his own blog, Perpetual Dissatisfaction

The Cast Of SNL Explain Why Game Of Thrones Is SOOO Popular

One of the only funny parts of the recent SNL telecasts have been the skits featuring Andy Samberg. There are some other funny cast members, but the skits where he plays a main role seem to be the only ones worth watching. A few weeks back Andy and the gang to a look into what exactly makes Game of Thrones so popular. It is quite true that the conclusion they come up with may absolutely be the reason behind the high ratings. And seeing Bobby Moynighan as George R.R. Martin is worth watching the whole clip... Check the clip after the jump.

Weapon Tyrion by Brandon Bird

I am completely enthralled with George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice & Fire" book series right now, so when I see a mash-up photo featuring The Imp dressed like Wolverine... well, that gets an automatic re-post!!! Artist Brandon Bird does an excellent job of portraying Tyrion Lannister (probably my favorite character in the series) as Wolverine from the X movies. Logan is supposed to be like 5'2 anyway... so this isn't to much of a stretch (pun intended). Click after the jump to see the full picture...

Springfield Becomes Westeros, Burns Is King... Just Another Opening Scene On The Simpsons!!!

Can a homage get any better than this? Matt Groening and the crew over at The Simpson's used their opening credits to pay an homage to the HBO show "Game of Thrones" by recreating the map of Westeros used to introduce the HBO show, but subbing in Springfield's geography instead. This works so well, and you have to love Mr. Burns as Robert Baratheon... Check out the original Game of Thrones opening as well as   the Simpsons homage after the jump...

Winter is Coming

"The things I do for love."

By the time that line is uttered in chilling fashion in HBO's "Game of Thrones," those viewers unfamiliar with George R. R. Martin's bleak epic, will be wearing the appropriate mouths agape expression. It was the moment I reached in reading the first book where I said to myself..... "oooohhhhh this is THAT kind of story, got it." It sets the stage for the numerous, unthinkably treacherous, acts that are carried out across the sprawling epic novels, and does the same for the television audience.

Having seen the first four episodes of HBO's gargantuan adaptation, I can say without the slightest fear of cliche that it is unlike anything we've ever seen before on television. Longtime fans of Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" series will be met with immediate satisfaction at seeing the familiar characters and locations brought to life with stunning accuracy, and the uninitiated viewer will be no less engaged by the tremendous production value and broad sweeping story.

(no spoilers)

The first episode sees world weary Eddard "Ned" Stark (Sean Bean) and his namesake family living generally peacefully, and cautiously, in their city of Winterfell. Their tranquility is quickly interrupted with an impromptu visit from The King, who calls upon his old wartime friend Ned, to return with him to court in King's Landing and assist him in ruling the realm. At the same time, far in the south, across the sea and outside of the Seven Kingdoms, the rightful heirs to The Iron Throne of King's Landing are setting plans in motion to reclaim their usurped kingdom. Also, in the North, outside The Great Wall guarded by the Night's Watch, there are unexplained disappearances and rumblings about dead men walking. As threats build on all sides and most dangerously from within, the Stark family's peace is quickly swallowed up by greed, lust and murder.

In true HBO fashion the production value is one of the big stars on display. From the worn wood and rusty chains of the elevator at The Great Wall, to the golden links in The Kingslayer's armor, every spot of detail has been meticulously crafted. The weight of the world is felt in every aspect of it. Much of the production was shot on location in suitable vistas in Ireland and Malta, and CG is used as it should be, as a tool to enhance the world beyond it's earthly constructs. Even the opening credits are incredibly innovative, and will be looked forward to every week.

The cast also seems cut from stone to play their parts. Sean Bean should probably just wear chain mail at all times and sleep in his beard and wig cause it just suits him so perfectly. Peter Dinklage is fan dream casting as the equally charming and scheming Tyrion Lannister. His sister, the calculating Cersei Lannister, is faithfully inhabited by Lena Headey of 'Sarah Connor' and '300' fame. There are several other familiar if not as famous faces peppered throughout. Most notable for me is Charles Dance (the glass eyed bad guy from 'Last Action Hero') as the ruthless Tywin Lannister and Mark Addy (the fat guy in 'The Full Monty') as King Robert Baratheon. Numerous unknowns inhabit the majority of the other roles to great success, especially the numerous children that play such a large role in the story.

The real question when it was first announced that a television adaption was going to undertaken, was how in the hell are they going to fit it all in there. With source material in the shape of 1000+ page novels liberties are bound to be taken. David Benioff and Dan Weiss do so in a very effective way. Events are omitted and others added or expanded on but it all happens in such an organic way that even loyalists and naysayers will be stressed to find real fault in it. All the major beats of the stories are accounted for, which is impressive given the plethora of characters that are present. That said the story that falls the most flat is events across the sea involving Daenerys Targaryen (Emelia Clarke) and her marriage to Khal Drogo (Jason Momoa, also starring as the title character in the forthcoming 'Conan' movie). These scenes drag a bit as it's not immediately evident what they have to do with any of the much more interesting events going on in the rest of the story. Although when I first read the book I felt the same way, and was eventually met with a strong payoff, which I am confident will play out in similar fashion in the series.

Game of Thrones is an engaging adult drama played out in a fantasy world. It is airing on a network known for producing some of the most noteworthy, original and uncompromising television of the last 20 years. No expense is spared in bringing this story to life. This type of treatment to genre material is what fanboys dream of. It's on pace to achieve the kind of success that shows like 'Battlestar Galactica' or 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' ALMOST did. To be taken seriously despite, or in fact because of, the fantastic qualities of the story.

"Game of Thrones" premiers this Sunday, April 17th at 9pm on HBO.

Damon Lindelof Tells George R.R. Martin To Eat A Dick...

I love when famous people get mad at each other... the pettiness comes out between them and it usually makes for some good laughs. In a recent interview with The New Yorker, 'Game of Thrones' author George RR Martin claimed he didn't want to "Pull a Lost" and mess up the ending of his 'Songs of Fire & Ice' book series. This lead 'Lost' showrunner and CCD fave Damon Lindelof  to go off on Martin via Twitter, calling out the author for talking shit. Now before you get all mad at Damon for being sensitive, he clarified his beef with Martin... he is not upset that Martin didn't like the ending of 'Lost', he is just mad that Martin tried to equate "Pulling a Lost" with a shitty ending. I agree with Damon... how are you going to bash a show that ruled the airwaves for six years when your show hasn't even begun to air yet?

Here are a few of Lindelof's tweets:
"I don't take issue with his opinion, I take issue with the fact that he coined 'Pulling a Lost' as empirically 'f--king up the ending,'"
"Not to mention, he agreed to say nice things if I sent him Mr. Friendly's beard, which I did"

"I've just been informed George is working on his feud response. I'll have it in FIVE YEARS! #NOYOUDINT"

Martin apparently heard that Lindelof was abusing him, so he fired back in another interview yesterday. Here are some of the highlights:
"When I reached the end and they hadn't pulled it altogether, in fact, they left a big turd on my doorstep," says the author bluntly, "I was pretty upset...it was about the second episode of Lost, I said, 'Oh, they're all dead.' They're all dead. That's what it would be in a half-hour Rod Sterling Twilight Zone, in 1958. And they took what? How many seasons to get to the point where they were all dead?"
This sent Lindelof over the edge, and he ended the arugument with these Tweets:
First: "They weren't dead the whole time." And second? "1997 called. It wants its web design back."
Hahahahahaha.... in Lindelof's defense, Martin's website is pretty terrible (see for yourself). I love this argument, especially that he attacks Martin's ridiculous beard and inability to finish & publish a book in a reasonable period of time. But I am looking forward to 'Game of Thrones'... keep the humor coming Damon. Don't let this bearded fuck talk shit about our favorite show!!!! And if he does, tweet this pic of him to teach him a lesson!!!
