Just More Proof On Exactly Why Zack Snyder Is One Of My Favorite People In Film And Why Joel Silver Sucks Ass...

Zack Snyder has been on my radar since I walked into the theater and plopped down my cash in the hopes of a mildly entertaining remake of George Romero's classic film Dawn of the Dead. Not only did I get that... I got way more! It was perfectly cast and extremely well shot, and basically started the whole 'zombies can move fast' sub genre. He followed that up with 300, which so blurred the lines of the 'Comics to Film' genre that at times during the movie I literally felt as if I was reading Frank Miller's classic comic panel for panel up on the big screen. After that, the kid could do no wrong in my eyes. Then it was announced that he would be heading up the big screen adaption of Watchmen. The Internet almost imploded in on its self, as an adaption of Watchmen had been kicked around for years and had names like Terry Gilliam as director and Joel Silver as a producer attached at various points. They were going to give this grail of a franchise to a nubie with two films under his belt? This seemed like a possible problem in the making. But to be honest, I was confident everything would work out A-OK. In my opinion I was more than correct...

Read More after the Jump....

Snyder turned out to be a huge comic nerd who had extreme reverence for the source comic book. He planned on making the film with the same precision and attention to detail that he had used when adaption 300... and he didn't care how long the movie ended up being. He planned on filming an animated accompaniment for The Black Freighter comic book story within a story from the original novel, as well as one featuring the early tales on the Minutemen. He had a plan for the finale, the one pitfall  that all the critics of a film adaption to Alan Moore's groundbreaking graphic novel always pointed out as impossible to translate to film. And he made it happen.

He cast a group of mostly unknown but perfectly matching actors for the roles of the Watchmen (with the exception of Billy Crudup most of them had minimal exposure prior to Watchmen and have become much bigger actors after) to act in the film, had a rock solid adaption in place, and was ready to make it all happen. Before filming the Internet was abuzz with how Snyder wasn't the right guys for the job... how a guy like Gilliam with his weird sensibilities would be perfect for the material, and that it was too deep and sprawling of an undertaking for a young dude like Snyder to handle. Turned out those people were idiots. The movie, in my humble comic book nerd opinion, is perfect. The changes are minor at best, and his ending (albeit slightly different from the comic) was close enough to be chalked up to cinematic necessity. He didn't just change shit to change it... everything that needed to be in place to convey the tone and feel of the original comic was present in the film. It was as close to perfect that I could have ever hoped for. And most people that I have encountered that know the original source material feel quite the same way. The film was a middling success, making a ton of moeny but not living up to the expectations (ie: HOPES) of a huge payout DC had dreamed of. Oh well.. doesn't mean the movie isn't great.

The Comedian is not amused at your criticism of his film !!!
Snyder has continued making movies of his own unique vision over the years, and with his role as producer on the long awaited 300 sequel 300: Rise of an Empire and as director of the upcoming Batman vs. Superman Snyder is back in front of the press and instead of them asking him questions about his upcoming projects they are still bringing up his work from the past... probably because ousted almost producer Joel Silver and guys like him are still taking shots at him every chance they get. The movie was filmed over 6 years ago, isn't it about time to let it go fellas?

In a recent interview with The Huffington Post to discuss his newest film, the Liam Neeson airplane thriller Non-Stop, Joel Silver couldn't help himself from taking shots at Snyder and his version of Watchmen. Silver talked out of his ass using quotes like Snyder was "too much a slave to the original material" and vowing that his and Gilliam's version would have turned out much better. This is ironic, considering Silver has been involved in his fair share of bombs over the years and Gilliam has many of his own difficulties getting his own films done. Since Snyder is himself on the circuit doing interviews for 300: Rise of and Empire, he was then asked to responded to Silver's assertions. As usual, Snyder did not disappoint!

Snyder found all of the comments laughable, but killed all of the noise with one simple comment. He said he made Watchmen for one reason and one reason only: He made the film for himself, and to save  it from guys like Silver and Gilliam. Wow. That is amazing. Ya see, Snyder was a comic fan long before he ever picked up a camera... and any REAL comic book fan knows how much reverence REAL comic book fans have for continuity and story lines. He was weaned on books like Watchmen... and these dudes thought they could have done better? Get the fuck outta here. Need more proof? Check out Silver's comments of about Gilliam's plans for the final act:

"Instead of the whole notion of the intergalactic thing, which was too hard and too silly, what he did was maintain that the existence of Doctor Manhattan had changed the whole balance of the world economy, the world political structure ... he had the Ozymandias character convince Doctor Manhattan to go back and stop himself from being created, so there never would be a Doctor Manhattan character. And in the vortex that was created after that occurred, these characters from Watchmen only became characters in a comic book".
Even Dr. Manhattan is horrified by Gilliam's vision !!!
That is a direct quote from Joel Silver... and further proof that dudes don't know when to shut the fuck up nor what a real comic fan would want in their adaption of Watchmen. If you think people ripped apart the casting of Ben Affleck as Batman or Snyder's ending of Watchmen on the Internet, what would have happened if that above ending ended up in cinemas? I think Gilliam would have been ripped to shreds and Silver might have had a bunch of 'splainin to do. Snyder went on to say that these comments by Silver are just more proof that they would have butchered the property and that he is glad he did the film because he is a fan first. So if he could live with it, in his eyes most real comic fans could live with it too. I am truly grateful that real comic fans like Snyder and others are making more comic films these days, as they better represent guys like me and my comic loving sensibilities. Love ya Zack... can't wait to see Bat-Fleck and what you do with the DC Universe once again !!!

The Popular Face of NY: An Art Exhibit by Raid 71 @ Bottleneck Galleries NYC

Bottleneck Galleries is at it again, and to be honest with you this may be the most fitting show they have done so far. You see, Bottleneck is located right here in my current hometown of Brooklyn, NYC... and, well lets face it, they are one of the only galleries here in NY that are focusing on pop cultured themed art shows. So when I saw that the subject of their most current show from artists Raid 71 (who was featured here on CCD a few months back... yeah buddy!) was 'The Popular Face of NY', I had to smile a bit. What better place to highlight a bunch of NYC themed art then right in the heart of Brooklyn? It is a perfect fit.... and I am loving what I have seen from the previews over at the Bottleneck Blog. They have some excellent step by step photos over their that show how these magnificent pieces come together, so get over there to check out some of the behind the scenes work on how these pieces of art come together. The show premieres tonight at 7:00 pm (I am definitely going tonight!!!) and runs for two weeks until March 29th, so if you live in the area make sure you get out there and support this local gallery in bringing pop culture art to NYC. You can click on the shop page starting March 16th at noon to buy some of the prints if you can't make it out there in person. I recommend getting on there early, cause these prints are sure to go quick as hell. Check out some of my faves after the jump...

Who Watches The Simpsons? by Chris Weiermiller

Every time I find out that one of my fellow geek friends has NOT read Watchmen I freak the fuck out and immediately try to get them my copy to read. Simply put, it is a right of passage that needs to be experienced by anyone who reads comics. As much as I think Alan Moore is a tool, he really killed this story and created some wonderful characters that have stuck with for over 20+ years. Another stallworth of the entertainment industry has been The Simpsons. I really haven't watched the show consistently over the past 10 years, but all I know is if you have 20+ years on the air you are doing something right. So of course it would be great to get these two properties together in a mashup by artist Chris Weiermiller. The character selection in a mashup is key, and Chris certainly nailed it with this piece. Maggie as Roscharch? Yup... I'm in!!!! Check out the full piece after the jump...

CCD Holiday Geek Gift Guide #5: What To Get The Comic Book Newbie In Your Life

I am a veteran of the comic book game... I have been collecting since I was four (just over 28 years) and I have tons of comics/graphic novels to prove it. I, along with many of my fellow 80's baby comic geeks, were way ahead of the current comic book movie craze and have read ALL of the source material that is making the summer blockbusters the masses are devouring at a record pace. But what if you have to buy a gift for the person who is just getting started with comics? Here is a list of a few of my personal faves that will give any comic fan, new or old, a smile on their face. These will even work for a hardcore fan, even though a true comic book head SHOULD have in their collection (both in issue format and collected versions...lol). Click after the jump for my suggestions...

Watchmen by Alan Moore & David Gibbons-

Why do I start here? Well, to put it simple and plain, this is THE GREATEST GRAPHIC NOVEL EVER WRITTEN!!! Period. Nothing to discuss. Pure fucking genius. Didn't like the movie? Doesn't fucking matter... if you read the source material, you will forget there even was a movie (even though I thought the movie was wonderful). Alan Moore is one of the greatest comic writers of all time, and David Gibbons drew one of the greatest comics ever. A good story and great images... what else does a comic need. The best part is that this is a self contained story in its own universe, which for all you non-comic heads means you don't need to know any back story to enjoy it. It's all there in this beautiful black and yellow covered comic... click here to buy the softcover version or here to buy the fancier hardcover.

Batman: The Long Halloween by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale-

Who doesn't love Batman? Not anybody I know, especially after Christopher Nolan did his thing on the past few Dark Knight movies. With the third film coming next summer, why not get somebody into the Batman groove? Now this is where most comic nerds would point you to Frank Miller's Batman: Year One (which is a solid choice and a great gift as well, but I digress)... but I have chosen to go in a different direction. Loeb and Sale revisit the early years in this Batman story that took place over 13 issues and is focused on Gotham Cities mafia families as well as all his colorful rouges. The gang is all here, from Joker to Riddler to Two Face... and the story is magnificent. Published back in 1996/97, it helped jump-start interest in DC Comics and The Bat for a whole new generation. I have my own copy signed by both Loeb and Sale, and it may very well be my favorite Batman story ever. This 384 page collection will definitely inspire more trips to the comic store for stories of Gotham's shining knight. Click here to order.

Wanted by Mark Millar & J.G. Jones-

Listen, I liked the movie as much as the next guy. James McAvoy is great as the loser Wesley Gibson, Angelina Jolie is perfect as Fox. Not to mention that sexy shot of her naked and soaking wet leaving the healing tub... nerd boner!!! But the movie, dope as it was, really has very little to do with Millar and Jones's original work. There is a shell of a story in the movie, but not at all like the one that is in the book. If you thought the movie was twisted, wait till you see this book. This one also takes place in a self contained universe (no complicated back stories that you need to know), but in this universe the bad guys won. All the way. And they have killed off EVERY SUPER HERO in the world. All of them... and brutally. These bad guys mind-wiped the rest of the world's memories of these heroes, and they rule the world free to rape/pillage/murder with impunity. And they do just that... a lot. Cursing, innocent people getting maimed and killed, rape for fun... yeah, it's a bad guys dream world. But bad guys can't play by the rules, so it's only a matter of time before one tries to overthrow the rest. Then it's bad guys vs badder guys, which can never be bad. Click here to order this one...

Start with these three, and then if all else fails try these other winners:

Little Big Planet 2 Is Finally Used For Something Great...

I myself have never payed, and will never play, 'Little Big Planet' for any video game system at all. Just not my thing. But who am I to criticize some other fellow nerds out there who like creating stuff from this game. Kudos to them. God knows I have some hobbies and nerd allegiances that would raise a few eyebrows (as I hide my Harry Potter box set under my Cloak of Invisibility). Anywho, my man Dracudelishio uses 'Little Big Planet' to create scenes from great movies amd nerd properties that we all love, and they are amazing. Need proof that 'Little Big Planet' can be cool??? Check after the jump for Dracudelishio's re-creation of Watchmen using LBP 2... it is insane!!!

A to Z Blogging Challenge - Day #15 - Letter O - Ozymandias

Movie & Comic Versions of Ozymandias

Ozymandias is one of my all time favorite comic book villains ever... and I am also sympathetic to his reasoning for wanting to create a "better world". For those of you guys who have no idea who the fuck Ozymandias is and what I am talking about, I have a question for you: Are you fucking KIDDING ME?

This panel is why Ozymandias is SO GANGSTER!!!

Ozymandias is the classic hero who has had enough trying to help a society that can't help itself. He is clearly superior to the rest of the world when it comes to frame of mind, so he hatches a plan to focus everybodies attention to a faked alien attack in the hopes that all of humanity will fight to unite against the intruders. The best part about Ozy is that he doesn't make the classic villain mistake of babbling about what he is going to do when confronted by Night Owl & Rorshach. Nope... when they ask him WHEN he plans on unleashing this attack, he tells them it already happened!!! Their reaction is to be stunned.... and there is nothing they can do about it. That makes him the best villain in my book.

Then there is his awesome genetically altered lynx companion Bubastis. How cool is this purple motherfucker? He would easily bring damage anybody who would want to harm Oz. This guy is so majestic it is scary. I was so sad when he was taken out at the end of the Watchmen film... he didn't get nearly enough screen time!!! All of these reasons make Ozymandias the greatest villain in the history of comics. He got it done... don't hate, congratulate!!!
