The Hateful Eight: Quentin Tarantino Takes On The Prairie, Stage Coaches, And The Old West...

QT is probably one of my favorite living directors, and his last few efforts (Inglorious Bastards and Django) have done nothing but make those sentiments stronger. In a world where directors are pumping out products, directing TV pilots, and executive producing pretty much everything in the world... Tarantino does a great job of doing what he does best: developing a unique concept, writing a script filled with killer dialouge and putting together one hell of a visual picture. Quentin got a bit mad when a script for his Wagon Train old west adventure picture The Hateful Eight got leaked on line and he abandoned the picture. He said he wasn't going to make it... but just six months or so later the project has gotten new life and it seems like QT is all set for a early 2015 shoot with a Christmas 2015 release (just in time for Oscar consideration BTW). The synopsis is insane, and the first poster looks fabulous. And this cast.. are you kidding me? Bruce Dern, Walter Goggins, Sam Jackson, Mike Madsen, Tim Roth and Kurt Russell... wow. As usual, no real big name women named so far. Just Amber Tambelyn. But knowing QT he will get a career making performance out of her before he makes her a star like he did Uma, Diane Kruger and Kerri Washington before. 'Big Bad Wolves' - What Happens When A Victims Family Becomes The Killers?

I love me some Quentin Tarantino, and that dude knows a thing or two about films. So when he declares that a movie is "the best of 2013", who am I to argue? I have become very interested in Big Bad Wolves, the Israeli horror thriller that is setting the world on fire and that QT has crowned the best of 2013. It centers around a child hunting serial killer who is terrorizing a small town. In an effort to garner a confession, a good cop pays two thugs to beat the suspect unmercifully. The beating is caught on tape, goes viral, and the police brutality allows the suspect to slip away from the system uncharged. But the father of the latest victim, a little girl whose body was missing her head when it was found, isn't just going to let it go. So he teams up with the disgraced former cop to engage in a little spot of kidnapping & torture of the suspect... and they are not taking it easy! This one looks amazing! Djesus Uncrossed

I have not watched much Saturday Night Live over the past few years, but I do often check out show highlights when there is a guest host or musical guest I like. So this past week when Christoph Waltz was the host, you just knew there was going to be some sort of Tarantino themed skit. I had no idea it would be as fantastic as the faux trailer for Djesus Unchained, another revisionist history movie in the vein of Django Unchained and Inglourious Bastards. Absolutely spot on, from the patented Tarantino fonts & credit styles, the music, and the impressions of QT staple actors like Samuel L. Jackson, Brad Pitt, and Ving Rhames. I also love the fact that he is nailed to a cross the whole skit!!!! Check it out after the jump....

Every Pop Culture Reference From Tarantino Movies In Chronological Order... In 5 Minutes!

I must start this article by saying that this video is a few month old and must have came out before Django was released because it does not have any traces of that movie in it (although I am not sure if Django had any pop culture references in it). I also love me some QT, so when I came across this cool ass video that tracks Tarantino's pop culture references into historical order from College Humor I just had to post it. Reviews From The Cave Of Cool - Django Unchained (2012)

The story of an ex-slave turned bounty hunter who goes on a blood soaked search for his wife is the most fun I have had with a movie in a long time. There are a hundred reasons why this shouldn't work but it does in spectacular fashion. This is another winner in the long lists of successes for Quentin Tarantino. You either love him or hate him but you can't ignore him.

I could watch Christoph Waltz in a movie everyday of the week. His Doctor King Shultz has such a cool line deliver and in this script he is given some brilliant things to say which he does with great relish. His humanity (even though he is a bounty hunter) is evident from the first time we see him. Tarantino has found his muse and I hope they make many movies together.

Daniel Day Lewis will get the Oscar for best actor but to me Waltz is even more deserving of praise because he had no model to base his character on. He only had his skills as an actor and great lines to create another memorable person in King Shultz. Luckily the Academy choose to nominate him in the Best Supporting actor spot so the two don't have to compete with each other. I have no doubt that Waltz will win his second Oscar and it's one of the few reasons I am interested in the awards show this year.

While searching for his latest bounty, Shultz finds Django (Jamie Fox), a slave. He frees him in exchange for information about the men Django knows and so begins the partnership of these two men who couldn't be more different but who at their hearts have a unique hatred of slavery.

Everyone who encounters the pair have a good reason to question their alliance but Waltz has an answer for everyone, be it a bullet or a well argued legal point. I found it thrilling. He knows every answer before the questions are even asked.

With his mentorship, Dr Shultz gives Django the confidence to seek out his own justice and it's alot of fun to see how quickly Django adapts to his new role as a 'free' man and avenging angel. The Dr. even teaches him to read.

To help Django develop he counsels that if you play the right 'role', you can achieve anything you want because racists are stupid and will believe anything you tell them.

I loved the way the story just pulls you in and makes you root for justice - violent justice but justice none the less. It was nicely cathartic to watch bad people get what was coming to them.

The Klansmen bitchin about the poor visibility they have through their hoods was hilarious. I like to think this is exactly the way these stupid peckerwoods operated.

"I think we all think that the bag was a nice idea. Now, not pointing any fingers, they could have been done better. So how 'bout, NO bags this time but NEXT time we get the bags right and go full regalia."

That is just GOOD writing and the funniest Klan-based comedy since Blazing Saddles. Was it necessary to the story? Not really but it reinforces the attitudes that whites had about blacks during that time in history and again, re-inforces the theme that racist white people are inherently dim and bigoted. Truth be told little has convinced me that those kinds of attitudes have changed in the South in the 150 years since slavery was abolished in the US.

I also have never seen a movie with a long running time feel so short. I wanted more of everything.

Once again Tarantino is a genius with his choice a music for the soundtrack. From all eras and styles he draws songs for inspiration and to set mood. His choices should jar you and take you out of the story but never do.

Now we have to talk about the use of the N-word. To me it's a non-issue. I personally cringe whenever I hear that word but in the context of this movie it's entirely appropriate. To not use it would have cheated us of the power that word has to put ground the story in some kind of reality, especially a movie set two years before the Civil War.

After what could have been it's own film, we get to part two of the tale. Django and Shultz discover where Django's wife, Brunhilda is. She was taught German as a child, a point that immediately intrigues Dr. Shultz and that small fact provides them with an opening to rescue Hildy from the clutches of her evil owner, the at once charming and deadly Calvin Caddie (Leonardo DiCaprio) from the plantation called Candyland.

Everything is working fine until a wise old house slave called Stephen (Samuel L. Jackson) trusts his instincts (and his immediate hatred for strutting Django) and throws the whole plan into the crapper.

It would cheat you to reveal what happens next but suffice it to say I left the theatre satisfied with everything I had seen and I think you will to.

Tarntino was criminally robbed of a best Director nomination but should win for best original screenplay - or at least I hope he does (N-word not withstanding). Nothing would please me more than seeing this excellent spaghetti western win Best Picture but nothing will stem the momentum that is Lincoln.

Samuel L.Jackson... I Love You Man!!!!!

Samuel L. Jackson has solidified himself as one of the busiest and coolest actors of a generation. he is 64 years old and has played everything from a Jedi Master to the greasiest haired hitman in the history of cinema. He is also General Nick Fury: the commanding officer of S.H.I.E.L.D., real life comic book villain Mr. Glass, and the guy who found them MOTHERFUCKING SNAKES ON THAT MOTHERFUCKING PLANE!!!! He has worn countless hairpieces & wigs, put on numerous accents, and made interrogation an artform while sprinkling in a bit of geography & religion into his line of questioning. The guy even had his own viral video reading a children's book (Go The Fuck To sleep... its great!)... so to say he could do pretty much anything is an understatement. But his role as house slave Stephen in Django Unchained may be his best yet. If it was up to me, this role would be the one that gets him the supporting actor statuette. He is uncompromising, gives his favorite director Quentin Tarantino the best performance of his career, and isn't afraid to defend the integrity of the movie itself. QT has never been afraid of using the word 'Nigger' in his movies, and when doing a press junket with Jake the Movie Guy from Houston's Fox Affliate Samuel l decided to get the lily white reporter to say the word himself. If you want to ask a question about the N word, you are going to have to say the N word yourself. The results are borderline 'Brett's Interrogation'  from Pulp Fiction, and it just goes to show you how cool Samuel L is and how deeply he believes in his work. The Hollywood Reporter Sits Down With Some Of The Best Directors In The Game... Mind, Blown!!!

If you have a spare hour to kill and you are fan of films and the people who make them, this is a video you have to watch. The Hollywood Reporter sat down Ang Lee, Tom Hooper, Ben Affleck, David O. Russell, Gus Van Sant, and Quentin Tarantino for a killer round table discussion about the current climate in film making and what each director feels about particular film making topics. I love the juxtaposition of  differing opinions and personalities in the room and I also adore the way Tarantino dominates the shit out of the conversation... something that I would not expect to go any other possible way. Tarantino is a larger than l;ife personality and he shines out among his quieter peers in this video, but there are some interesting tidbits from each of the directors that appear in this video. I am especially intrigued by Ben Affleck in this group. There is no denying that Affleck has some talent behind the camera.... I loved Gone Baby Gone and The Town, but they were safe Boston movies for the burgeoning auteur  But Argo takes him out of that comfort zone and he is being talked about for an Oscar (I have not seen it yet, so I reserve judgement). I have never met a bigger fan of Quentin Tarantino then myself. That is not just me waxing poetically... I really feel like their is nobody THAT I KNOW who likes all of his work as much as me. I remember seeing Reservoir Dogs back in 1994 on a borrowed VHS after Pulp Fiction blew up. A friend lent it to me... and he promptly never got it back. 'The Man With The Iron Fists' - 2nd Red Band Trailer Introduces Some Of The Warriors In The Movie

Rza is and has been one of the most experimental people in the entertainment industry. He has put music to the side and entered the world of film with a bang. He has mostly appeared as an actor, but now he is about to take a turn as a writer & director of his first feature film 'The Man With The Iron Fist'. There has been a short teaser trailer released, but now we get a full on red band trailer that also introduces some of the crazy looking characters by name. Jack Knife? Madame Blossom? Brass Body? The Blacksmith? Holy shit am I looking forward to this one!!!! Add in producers like Eli Roth & Quentin Tarantino overseeing the production and this one has all the makings of a cult classic before it ever shows on a screen. The film comes out November 2nd. The Red Band Trailer For 'The Man With The Iron Fists' Is Eye Popping... Literally!!!!

The Wu Tang Clan are one of my all time favorite rap groups, and here at CCD we usually spend Wednesdays celebrating the greatness of the Wu (even though I have fallen off lately). But like any group in the music business they have peaked and the members are off doing other things. Quite a few of the members have crossed over to the acting profession, with Method Man & Rza leading the charge. But while Mr. Meth has gotten into a plethora of projects both big & small, Rza has scored some key roles in HUGE movies like American Gangster, Funny People, and Tarantino's next hit Django Unchained. These huge films have lead him to forming some awesome friendships with the likes of Russell Crowe & Tarantino himself, and when Rza decided to step behind the camera himself to direct a movie he got the proverbial 'help from his friends'! His first film is entitled 'The Man With The Iron Fists', which sounds like it was the title of an older Wu Tang song. He got his pal Russell Crowe along as the star, got QT as the producer, and even plucked some Tarantino regulars in Lucy Liu & Eli Roth to help make the film awesome. The final step was to make the action/fight scenes larger than life, as any fan of the Wu knows that the guys love in their movies. Rza seems to have nailed this aspect if nothing else. This is the red band trailer for the film, so that means uneditted for content. But instead of nudity, expect to see some eye popping fighting... literally! Check the trailer out after the jump....

Reservoir Dogs by Ibraheem Youssef

I love alternate movie posters, probably because of the fact that the majority of movie posters put out officially these days suck. They do not take the time to create a witty, thought provoking image that is representative of an aspect of the film... nope, now most of the time we get a bunch of floating heads and slanted backgrounds (why is this so popular now?). Gone are the days of painted images, iconic posters, and important artistic contributions... but the Internet has brought those days back, albeit in a non official capacity. Ibraheem Youssef has some killer work on his website from a plethora of films, but the one that stood out to me had to be his Reservoir Dogs poster, so that is the one I chose to focus on featuring today. 'Django Unchained' Finally Gets A Trailer... I Promptly Faint!!!

Quentin Tarantino is one of my favorite directors ever... shit, he is my favorite living director hands down. I look forward to every movie he makes with baited breath, anticipating another instant classic with each crazy plot point and casting choice QT announces. So when he said he was going to make a blaxploitation western starring Jamie Foxx as a free slave & Chistoph Waltz/Leonardo Dicaprio as white southerners with opposite views on slavery... yeah, my interest was piqued. Now we finally have a trailer. This is the safe for work trailer. I don't know if they could ever release a red band trailer for this flick, not with QTs penchant for the 'N' word... Pulp Fiction: The Official Infographic by Noah Smith

Pulp Fiction is a masterpiece of a film... a true originator in the art form of flashback/flashforward story telling. It was the second time Tarantino used that flashback/flashforward format (Reservoir Dogs jumps all over as well) that we often see imitated by many other directors. While the story itself is pretty simple to put together AFTER you watch it (especially as many times as I have seen it!), the true layering of the story is pretty intricate. Cue Noah Smith, a graphic designer and self confessed Tarantino enthusiast, who wanted to create the definitive infographic to properly organize a timeline of the events in the film. True Romance by James Fenwick

True Romance is a truly underrated movie borne out of the mind of Quentin Tarantino. It has a crazy plot, extreme violence, sex, more violence, Belky from Perfect Strangers, Cantaloupes, Gary Oldman as a Rasta drug dealer, Brad Pitt before he was Brad Pitt.... wow, I can't believe I just typed all of that!!! How It SHOULD Have Ended: Pulp Fiction

The gang of at How It Should Have Ended do a great job drawing animated sequences that show us how many of the films we all know and love SHOULD have ended. These 2-4 minute clips are usually quite humorous and filled with truths... often times truths we as film fans don't want to acknowledge. Why should we use common sense when it is so much easier to suspend belief and swallow the unbelievable endings we are often forced to endure? Even though HISHE has had many, many videos in the past, my favorite has to be their take on Pulp Fiction. HISHE sums up all the storylines in the film, in a realistic way that will make you smile! Calvin & Hobbes were at a Lego convention. Ho hum....big deal. Whoa! Wait just a minute! Did you say Calvin & Hobbes? Love 'em!

Our brothers to the north, 'Calvin's Canadian Cave of Cool', posted this great groups of gods and astronomers minifigs that were made with aluminum and were launched with the Atlas V rocket the first week of August. Legos boldly going where no brick has gone before! Thanks Cal.....maybe this one's a giant leap for brick but, a small step in getting you to embrace all that is Lego.

While CCD was on hiatus, one of the biggest pieces of Lego news was that Marvel Entertainment & The Lego Group made an official announcement that the future would hold a very surprising merger.....full lines of Super Hero Mini Figures and sets! KAPOW!

Soon after, both the Brothers Brick site & Comics Alliance posted photos of some VERY early stage development heroes. This sent me into a brick-coma with anticipation! Not only would they be venturing into a full- line of MARVEL Superheroes extended from the previous Spider-Man brick line...as the announcement first implied but, also a full line of DC Super heroes....extended from their previous Batman line. Absolutely too good to be true. The article notes that these won't just be Mini Figures...but, buildable vehicles and playsets as well. Get a gander at the prototypes.

Also, Model Gal snagged a punch of photos at the recent San Diego Comic Con booth showcasing the heroes in all their glory. What's your thoughts on possible playsets and vehicles for these super bricks? Fortress of Solitude? The Lex-or 7? Tell us in the comment space provided.

Ah Orion Pax is at it once again. Out-doing himself for the pleasure of all Lego fandom. Not only has he duplicated the 'Batcave' and 'Batmobile' from the Tim Burton films...

.......but than, he was inspired to go back to the brick table and painstakingly recreate the original 1960's TV show 'Batmobile' and 'Batcave'. To the batcave!!

Creato Azaghal Gabilzaramul wants Superman to 'Kneel Before Zod'....an homage to, what still, may be the greatest 'Superman' film of all time. You disagree? Best not to anger the good general.

Lego has an official 'Lego Stamp Contest' underway. Click the link for details but, in a nutshell you or your little one can create a postage stamp featuring your favorite bricks. Winners may receive a new 'Winter Village Post Office' set....or have their work featured in a super-sized mosaic and included in the November 2011 Lego catalog. I'm going to be sure to make a submission. If you, also, feel so brick-inclined...send me pics of your creation/submission.

Thanks to one of my favoritest daily blog stops, SuperPunch Blogspot, for posting a link to Ochre Jelly's kickass 'Kick-Ass' themed statuettes. Still not sure which is the side kick after seeing this raw, superbly made crimefighter flick...but, I sure as hell dig the duo!

The Bronx Zoo in New York unveiled their 'LEGO Wildlife Expedition' while we were away, also. The Bronx Zoo Exhibit is one where visitors could  go on a Zoofari to find all the life-size Lego animal statues scattered through the park. ROOooaaar!! Man I'm growling mad I missed this one....but I guess it just wasn't in the bricks for me this time around. 

  

Artist and builder 'Ickelpete' not only moved me with this R2-D2 piece...but, also made the R2-D2 piece move! Yep, this little droid is 'fully operational'! Just watch it go in the clip below...than head on over to I.P.'s Flickr page and give him propers.

Artist Mike Stimpson has been creating some fun vignettes with Star Wars Lego Minifigures. One of his latest Wookie Chess Championship isn't as fun for all involved. 'Always let the Wookie win' seems to be the moral of this one! Thanks to 'Rampaged Reality' for the tip!

Also over the hiatus, the Cartoon Network aired, what I hope to be the first of many, a Star Wars animated special entitled Lego Star Wars 'The Padawan Menace'. The tale takes you on tour with C-3P0 and R2-D2 as they babysit some of the new youngling padawans. True to the Lego Star Wars genre, comedy and hi-jinx ensue and it all turns out to be light-hearted fare for all ages. If you missed it, I grabbed the show in it's entirety off of YouTube (albeit a bit shaky since it's filmed straight off the screen by camcorder). Otherwise, look for it on Bluray/DVD combo! (Which includes an exclusive Minifig!)

Thanks to Rampaged Reality for putting me onto the brilliant work of Imagine Rigney. Imagine has been creating sequences and surroundings from the hit video game 'BioShock' all from Lego brick, of course! I'm not too familiar with aspects of the game but, from what I've seen, some of the visuals are dead-on.

'The Brick Show' has images of, what very well could be, 10 of the upcoming Lego series 6 Minis. (Nerd-gasm!). I love me some 'Genie'! If I had 3 wishes it would be to have THESE now! (Honestly, a BLUE Genie seems like there might be a little copyright infringement involved there...and that grey alien just doesn't seem like Lego's style.)...but keep your fingers and bricks crossed! What's your favorite?
