I have never met a bigger fan of Quentin Tarantino then myself. That is not just me waxing poetically... I really feel like their is nobody THAT I KNOW who likes all of his work as much as me. I remember seeing Reservoir Dogs back in 1994 on a borrowed VHS after Pulp Fiction blew up. A friend lent it to me... and he promptly never got it back. I watch the two of those movies more times between 1994-2000 than anything else. I loved the dialogue, the violence, and the overall craziness of a Tarantino movie... there is nothing better. Tarantino's 20 years in the film game run parallel with the success of Harvey Weinstein's Miramax films, so it's only fitting that Miramax is teaming with Lionsgate to give us the ultimate Tarantino box set, Tarantino XX. 'Raiders Of The Lost Ark' Is Coming To Imax & Blu-Ray... Will It Be Worth The Trip?

I am a bit late to the game when it comes to Imax. I saw some early movies in Imax (Batman Begins, Transformers, etc) and then didn't go back to the Imax format again for awhile. That all changed with my trip to see The Dark Knight Rises in all its Imaxed glory. While the film looked wonderful and sounded amazing, I have to be honest when I say that I was turned off by one specific problem: The Price. The tickets here in NYC cost $22 dollars for an Imax film, whether its a matinee show or a show after 5. That is super expensive, and not including the surcharge that would be added if the film was 3-D. That would be at least 5 bucks more. That is a lot of money to see a film, especially when I can buy and own a Blu-Ray for under 15 bucks and watch it more than once on my high def TV at home. I said that if I ever go to see a Imax film again, it would have to be something special. Well, I didn't think it would be so soon, but it looks like I will be there at an Imax screen this September. Raiders of the Lost Ark has gone through the conversion process and will be appearing on Imax screens for one week from September 7-13th! Steven Spielberg is raving about how great his original film looks and I am excited to see one of my favorite movies of all time looking sharp and sounding wonderful. The full Indy set also comes out on Blu-Ray, and to celebrate that AMC will be having a marathon of all four films (not in Imax, just regular) on September 15th! 'Tetsuo: The Iron Man & Bullet Man' FINALLY Gets A HD Release... Japanese Cult Film Lovers Rejoice!!!!

I have a very weird and eclectic taste in films. My Top 10 film list would make most peoples heads spin (I MIGHT just post this list someday) because my choices would be so against the grain. I love mainstream Hollywood movies, movies with big stars, and commercial films as much as the next guy... but give me a weird indy film, especially a foreign indy film, and I will love it to death!!!! Enter Tetsuo: The Iron Man, one of the freakiest fucking movies I have EVER seen in my entire life. It comes from director Shinya Tsukamoto, who is a legend in the Japanese film industry. The movie is a bizarre trip down the rabbit hole and features some of the sickest scenes I have ever seen on film. It spawned two sequels as well, Tetsuo: The Body Hammer and Tetsuo: The Bullet Man. The Body Hammer just took the franchise to the next level and now the first two films (Iron Man & Body Hammer) will be released in High Definition Blu Ray format for the first time ever... and I for one can't wait to see this film burst off the screen. They hit in October and a cool ass trailer has been put together for this release. Hopefully the third film will follow soon (It is currently streaming on Netflix). The 'Item 47' Teaser Trailer... Marvel Short Films Just Got Real!!!!

So it looks like my decision to not buy any of the Phase 1 Marvel superhero movies on Blu Ray yet is paying big dividends. The ginormous box set that is being planned with the release of Avengers in a few months will include Iron Man 1 & 2, Thor, Captain America, The Incredible Hulk & the Avengers... but it will also include all of the Marvel short films which have bridged the gaps between all of these movies. It also includes 'Item 47', the newest short film that takes place AFTER the Avengers movie. It stars Jesse Bradford & Lizzy Caplan (I absolutely sweat this girl) as two regular schmoes who stumble across a piece of Chitauri weaponry and decide to make some criminal moves to better their life. The Muppets Take On The Hunger Games To Promote Their DVD/Blu Ray Release

The Muppets have had a really big year, and it is about to get bigger with the DVD/Blu Ray release of the new Muppet movie on March 20th. Living up to the tradition that was set when promoting the movie last fall, a new spoof commercial has been constructed to hype the release in the vein of the upcoming 'Hunger Games' blockbuster movie. CCD Holiday Geek Gift Guide Vol #4: Rise of the Planet of the Apes Blu-Ray

Here we go again... with only a couple of weeks left before the big day, it's time for you to start knocking out all of the Christmas shopping you haven't finished yet. We have been trying to help you pick gifts for the fickle geeks that inhabit your life, and today we are focusing on the Blu-Ray/Movie geek in your life with the release of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Let me preface this recommendation by saying the following things:

First of all, I have NOT SEEN this movie. Yes, it is true. i am recommending a movie for you to buy your geeky loved ones DESPITE the fact that I have not seen the film myself. But I have my reasons for that. Both my partner in crime Jeff Bond (who is an Ape franchise nut) and my son Mikey (who at 8 knows more about geek properties than most adults) have whole heartily endorsed this movie. They both LOVED it... calling it one of their favorite movies of the summer. Fellow CCDers Joe Fletch and Tommy Lombardozzi also liked the flick, so I gotta go with the consensus. 

Secondly, they are pushing for Andy Serkis to be nominated by the Academy for a best supporting actor oscar. Now this normally wouldn't be such a big deal, but Serkis NEVER APPEARS ON SCREEN IN THE MOVIE AS HIMSELF. He is the actor that was motion captured to bring the head ape Caesar to life... and boy has he! Serkis also did this for Gollum in the Lord of the Rings, and he became one of the most memorable parts of that trilogy. With 10 years of film advancement since then, Serkis and the special effects gang are sure to bring it big time. 

Finally, this is exactly what you want in a Blu-Ray. I have over 1,000 DVDs, and I love HD video as much as the next guy. But I AM NOT re-buying every film I own on Blu-Ray because it looks better. truth is, the difference doesn't mean that much TO Me (I know there is a huge difference... this is just my opinion!). But I have gotten a Blu-Ray player and my criteria for purchasing movies in this medium is that the film must be visually stunning. This is the best example of a film that I NEED to see in Blu-Ray... the CGI is gonna be banging in High def!!!! This is the reason why Blu-Ray is as awesome as it is...

The Blu-Ray & DVD of Rise of the Planet of the Apes comes out Tuesday December 13th. Check a few different stores for the best prices, but Amazon and Best Buy usually have the best deals. Buy this Blu ray for the film geek in your life!!!

More Proof That George Lucas Is A Douche...

Even though CCD was still on Summer break this past week, I received tons of emails from friends and associates wanting to know my opinion on even more announced changes to the original films by George Lucas when the new Blu ray versions of the entire saga came out. Given our past tumultuous relationship with Georgie Boy and the scummers over at Lucas Arts, I abstained from commenting about this latest ass fuck courtesy of Lord George to all his loyal fans. But I have uncovered an article on the 'Net that is sure to make you even more mad at Uncle George... (Continued after the jump)



... because way back in 1988 he actually testified in front of Congress ABOUT THE ALTERING OF FILMS FROM THERE ORIGINAL INTENDED STATE!!!

Yup, you read that right... the guy who has been changing the Star Wars franchise every chance he gets actually testified before Congress on just how bad it would be for people to edit films from the past with new technologies. "My name is George Lucas. I am a writer, director, and producer of motion pictures and Chairman of the Board of Lucasfilm Ltd., a multi-faceted entertainment corporation. I am not here today as a writer-director, or as a producer, or as the chairman of a corporation. I've come as a citizen of what I believe to be a great society that is in need of a moral anchor to help define and protect its intellectual and cultural heritage. It is not being protected.

Can you believe the balls on this guy? Wait, it gets better!!! 

 The destruction of our film heritage, which is the focus of concern today, is only the tip of the iceberg. American law does not protect our painters, sculptors, recording artists, authors, or filmmakers from having their lifework distorted, and their reputation ruined. If something is not done now to clearly state the moral rights of artists, current and future technologies will alter, mutilate, and destroy for future generations the subtle human truths and highest human feeling that talented individuals within our society have created.

How George? By having Vader scream "Nooooo!!!" like a pansy when tossing The emperor overboard   in Jedi, or having Greedo shoot first to justify Han killing him? Dick....

 A copyright is held in trust by its owner until it ultimately reverts to public domain. American works of art belong to the American public; they are part of our cultural history. People who alter or destroy works of art and our cultural heritage for profit or as an exercise of power are barbarians, and if the laws of the United States continue to condone this behavior, history will surely classify us as a barbaric society. The preservation of our cultural heritage may not seem to be as politically sensitive an issue as "when life begins" or "when it should be appropriately terminated," but it is important because it goes to the heart of what sets mankind apart. Creative expression is at the core of our humanness. Art is a distinctly human endeavor. We must have respect for it if we are to have any respect for the human race.

Notice how he uses the term "for profit" there when calling the defilers of films "barbarians". He is not merely talking about people who pillage public domain films that no one owns the copyrights to anymore... he is singling out ANYBODY looking to ransack a culturally significant film and make money on it. Who would do something like that???

 These current defacements are just the beginning. Today, engineers with their computers can add color to black-and-white movies, change the soundtrack, speed up the pace, and add or subtract material to the philosophical tastes of the copyright holder. Tommorrow, more advanced technology will be able to replace actors with "fresher faces," or alter dialogue and change the movement of the actor's lips to match. It will soon be possible to create a new "original" negative with whatever changes or alterations the copyright holder of the moment desires. The copyright holders, so far, have not been completely diligent in preserving the original negatives of films they control. In order to reconstruct old negatives, many archivists have had to go to Eastern bloc countries where American films have been better preserved.

Ha! Double Ha!! Triple Ha!!! The gall on this prick. Not only has his actions over the past twenty years completely contradicted everything he said in front of Congress, but it seems he used his speech as an exact blueprint on how to become a film pillager himself !!! "Engineers with THEIR COMPUTERS"... what a dick!

 
In the future it will become even easier for old negatives to become lost and be "replaced" by new altered negatives. This would be a great loss to our society. Our cultural history must not be allowed to be rewritten. 

There is nothing to stop American films, records, books, and paintings from being sold to a foreign entity or egotistical gangsters and having them change our cultural heritage to suit their personal taste.

Egotistical gangsters huh??? If the shoe fits...

I accuse the companies and groups, who say that American law is sufficient, of misleading the Congress and the People for their own economic self-interest.I accuse the corporations, who oppose the moral rights of the artist, of being dishonest and insensitive to American cultural heritage and of being interested only in their quarterly bottom line, and not in the long-term interest of the Nation.The public's interest is ultimately dominant over all other interests. And the proof of that is that even a copyright law only permits the creators and their estate a limited amount of time to enjoy the economic fruits of that work. There are those who say American law is sufficient. That's an outrage! It's not sufficient! If it were sufficient, why would I be here? Why would John Houston have been so studiously ignored when he protested the colorization of "The Maltese Falcon?" Why are films cut up and butchered?

Why the fuck is anybody gonna listen to John Huston? He didn't have crazy billions like you do right now George. And you could really do something now with all that money if you wanted to... really save the cultural relevance of Star Wars for future generations by simply doing one thing: Nothing!!!!   

 Attention should be paid to this question of our soul, and not simply to accounting procedures. Attention should be paid to the interest of those who are yet unborn, who should be able to see this generation as it saw itself, and the past generation as it saw itself. I hope you have the courage to lead America in acknowledging the importance of American art to the human race, and accord the proper protection for the creators of that art--as it is accorded them in much of the rest of the world communities."

 I hate George Lucas right now after reading this speech more then I ever did before. Most of you guys know me as a Lucas apologist... but no more! I don't condone your fucked up editing choices, but they wouldn't seem nearly as bad if you hadn't passionately ranted IN FRONT OF CONGRESS on how morally wrong they are!!! Fuck you George Lucas... fuck you up your stupid ass. Oh, and one more thing: I AM NOT BUYING YOUR FUCTARD BLU RAY SET BECAUSE YOU HAVE SUCCEEDED IN MAKING DARTH VADER SEEM LIKE A WHINY BITCH.... and because you are a dick!

 

I Love Me Some Scarface... But A Grand? WTF???

One of the movies that got me through my college years was Al Pacino's classic Scarface. Brian De Palma made a classic movie that encompassed everything that was grimy in the 80's. Drugs, crime, guns, women, double crosses... this one had it all. Honestly, it has always been high on my list of favorite movies. It was actually the 4th DVD I ever bought. This was the poster I had hanging on my wall at Manhattan College:

But now we are getting a special edition Blu Ray that will cost $999.99 and even I can't begin to think a situation that justifies it. Take it away /Film:

Come on man... who thought this was a good idea? You know there is gonna be a ton of cornball NFL & NBA players that love to quote Pacino's famous "Say hello to my little friend" line but couldn't explain what the movie really represents dropping the grand for this... no "regular" fan is gonna buy it. I still got my DVD version... so I'll stick with that. If you are inclined to cop this Blu Ray that is the price of a used car, it comes out September 6th.

Tron: The Next Day by JediRob

'Tron: Legacy' was one of my top anticipated movies last year. After all was said and done, it wasn’t quite a life changing experience, but with such ridiculous buildup, how could it be. I did enjoy it quite a bit, though. It was pretty much what I should have expected from a Tron sequel, and it was a ton of fun. I dug the Father and Son story, loved that it was a sequel and not just a straight up remake, enjoyed the Daft Funk score (robbed of an Oscar nod) and a showdown between 2 Jeff Bridgeses?!

Come oooon! Great stuff.

This week a short film examining the time between the first and second Tron films has popped up on the webs…



This bit is apparently included on the new Blu-Ray box set that is set to release April 5th.

This set looks very impressive. It comes in a variety of versions; the one pictured being the most ridiculous. It’ll include Legacy as well as the original “Tron” in HD for the first time, after some serious shenanigans from Disney. It’s also supposed to include some deleted scenes, that have yet to sneak their way onto the internet, which may or may not be leading towards a Tron 3. Or T3ON. Or ThReeON. Or something.

Honestly part of the thrill of Legacy was the long timespan in-between the films, so unless it’s in anther 30 years I’m not dying to hop on the lightcycle again. That said I do the think the preview for the upcoming animated 'Tron: Uprising' looks promising. It also takes place between the 2 movies and features the voice of the Tronster himself, Bruce Boxleitner.



I will of course watch a sequel in a heartbeat. And if they do I can only hope that includes the return of Sci-Fi legend David “there are five lights” Warner. He was of course alluded to in the appearance of his son in the surprising Cillian Murphy cameo. And if what I hear about the deleted scenes is true, there is a strong possibility he could be back.
