Rise of The Guardians - Trailer & Character Cards

I read A LOT of movie news... A LOT!!! But every once and again something slips past me and I have no idea what everyone is talking about. This is a case with Rise of the Guardians, the Dreamworks animated release that will be in theaters on November 21st.  This one looks fantastic, with all the heroes of our youth (Santa, the Easter Bunny, etc) protecting children against Pitch (the Boogeyman). The trailer looks magnificent and the character cards they created to describe each one of the figures in the movie make me want to see it even more. Add an all star voice cast that features Chris Pine, Hugh Jackman and Alec Baldwin (among others) and you got my 10 bucks... this one looks to be a holiday season hit. Check out the trailer and the clips after the jump....

And now the character cards:

Historical Star Wars Paintings by Ninja Ink

Star Wars characters are often used by artists to show of their interpetation of what they would do with the characters. Sometimes this works great, other times not so much. But some of my faves come when they put the failiar Star wars characaters in some other popular surroundings. Take Ninja Ink's Star Wars Paintings as a good example. They take two classic paintings from American History (Washington Crossing the Deleware & I don't know the name of the other) and re-imagine them with Star Wars figures. these are phenomenal. Check them out after the jump....

Will Smith Pops Shit: A Supercut Of Will Smith Talking Smack

Will Smith has made some kick ass movies, and from what I understand he has another one in theaters right now (Men In Black 3... I haven't seen it yet, heard great things). And while he is starring in these fantastic action movies, he frequently pops shit. Yup, I said it... my man talks mad smack! How much smack? Enough smack for Film.com to create a Supercut of some of his greatest one liners and shit talking throughout his career. Wipe your mouth Will... LOL. Check the video after the jump...

Disney's X-Men by American Ninja X

Ever since the merger between Disney & Marvel there have been tons of mash-ups to hit the 'Net, but usually they are pretty bored an uninspired. But Deviant Artist American Ninja X has come up with some really good ones featuring Disney versions of the X-men. Very well done indeed. Check out the full gallery after the jump...

Calvin & Hobbes: The Video Game by Johan Vinet

I have always had a soft spot for Calvin & hobbes, Bill Waterson's wonderful comic strip. I am not nearly as huge of a fan as my boy Joe Esq may be, but I know that lots of people have love for the little boy & his imaginary tiger. So whenever I come across something cool featuring these great characters, I have to post them on CCD. Artist Johan Vinet creates an excellent 16 bit version of the dynamic duo if they had been the lead characters in a Sega Genesis game, and the results are stupendous. After the jump, check out both a GIF and full video version of the opening title card from the faux game, and take a trip down memory lane with two of the best comic strip characters of all time.

and now the video version with moving background:

The Excavation Of Mushroom Island by Logan Zawacki

What if the world of Super Mario Brothers was real? What if those warp zone pipes didn't take our favorite plumbers from Brooklyn to another world, but rather to a deserted island somewhere in the South Pacific? There would have to be some sort of evidence of the existence of these fantastic times... and now there is!!!! Author Logan Zawacki has self published a very interesting book entitled 'The Excavation of Mushroom Island', which details an archaeological excavation that has turned up the skeletal remains of some well known Mario game characters. Bowser, Toad, Goombas, Koopa Troopas, and even the brothers themselves... these X-Ray photos make for a cool book. Right now it is available on Blurb for $50.00 (which seems like a lot but is not that much for a self published book with this many cool full color photos). Check out the official Flickr stream here, and click after the jump for my faves of the bunch....

No Church In The Wild - Jay-Z & Kanye West ft. Frank Ocean

Watch The Throne was my favorite album last summer, uniting two hip hop legends like Jay-Z & Kanye to produce a pretty great record. One of the hottest tracks on the album had to be 'No Church In The Wild'. The beat is bananas, the lyrics are fantastic, and Frank Ocean's street sounding R&B sound complete a perfect track. It has such an ominous beat that it has become the "it" song for movie trailers since last summer, featuring prominently in the Denzel Washington/Ryan Reynolds film Safe House & the upcoming Leonardo DiCaprio version of The Great Gatsby (Huh... wtf?). So it seemed fitting for the crew to reach out to Romain Gravas, who has a knack for making music videos that may only be 4 minutes long but are like full length movies. This one is full of drama and intensity. Plus I love that they used the unedited version of the song for the video. Check it out embedded after the jump....

Super Team Family: Mister Miracle & The Escapist by Ross

One of my favorite blogs on the Internet is 'Super Team Family: The Lost Issues' by an excellent digital artist named Ross. The site has gone through a few incarnations, once focusing on Batman team-ups and then on Thing team-ups. Now he puts together awesome Super Family team-ups that have not and probably will not ever happen. He takes great characters that bare totally unrelated and makes you see just how great they would work together. Case in point: Today's team-up features one of my favorite characters in the history of comics Mr. Miracle as well as the titular superhero from The Adventures of Kavalier & Clay novel The Escapist. Both of these guys are escape artists and magicians... that is the easy tie in. But Ross dug deep into the world of a Pulitzer Prize winning novel to take the comic character from the story within the story to find the perfect match for Mister Miracle. Wow... what a great cover. Keep up the great work Ross. Check out the full piece after the jump...

'The Rains of Castamere' by The National

Anyone who is reading or has read the 'A Song of Ice & Fire' book series by George R.R. Martin (Game of Thrones for people who only watch the TV show) knows what a stickler for details. one of the things he is known for is including songs that the different families and people of the 7 Kingdoms sing. Martin frequently puts whole verses of his songs into the narrative text of the books to drive home how important these songs are to the relaying of history in a time long before published books were prevalent. While songs like 'The Bear and the Maiden Fare' & 'The Song of the Seven' serve to relive some past battle or tell a story, one of the songs sticks out for its shear viciousness and malice. This song is 'The Rains of Castamere', which details how the Lannisters destroyed a whole family of nobles who rebelled against their power. Now hipster faves The National have sung a version for the Season 2 soundtrack, and it sounds as spooky and ominous as I would have thought it should. Check out the full song after the jump and remember a Lannister always pays his debts...

'Holy Motors' - The Strangest Film To Come Out Of Cannes This Year

The Cannes film festival is still one of the most important film festivals in the world in terms of breaking films and creating buzz. The festival is single handily responsible for the careers of such directors as Quentin Tarantino & Kevin Smith, and has made the Weinstein Company one of the biggest players in the movie industry. Those of you non film snobs may not know much about the festival besides its name... so here is a quick crash course. The main award of the festival is called the Palm d'Or. The winner of the Palm d'Or gets all types of free press, praise, and usually ends up a successful film do to the push from the win. But when there is an upset (as there was this year) sometimes more than one film can benefit from just being nominated. This year a movie called 'Amour' took the top prize, but it is the very weird and bizarre 'Holy Motors' that is generating the most buzz. It comes from controversial film director Leos Carax & has a few recognizable names starring in it (Kylie Minogue, Eva Mendes), and judging by the trailer it is bat shit crazy. Maybe that is why it didn't get the win... it may have been too weird for its own good. Check the full trailer out after the jump and keep your eyes peeled for 'Holy Motors' to be hitting a indy cinema near you...

'Good As Gold' - A Doctor Who Short To Help Hold You Over Until Season 7

Doctor Who has become a bit of an obsession for me. Not just Doctor Who, but pretty much all BBC shows. But Doctor Who is what started it for me. So one can imagine just how hard it is for me each spring/summer as I wait in anticipation for the next season to start. Doctor Who is also one of the most popular shows among kids in England. A lot of the shows popularity comes from the younger demographic. So the gang over at BBC decided to kill two birds with one stone and create a short based on a script written by the students of  the Ashdene School. The result is 'Good As Gold', and features the Doctor, Amy (my god I love her), a Weeping Angel, and the Olympic Torch... yup, this short is pretty great. Good job kids. Catch the full episode after the jump....

Disney's Mother Of Dragons by Mona Collentine

I am in full force Game of Thrones mode lately.... I have a couple of pages left in Book #3, Season 2 of the show is wrapping up next week, and I just ordered a book called "Beyond The Wall" which is a collection of essays about George R.R. Martin's seminal book series. So when I was over at my boy Jeremy Barker's Popped Culture website and I saw this awesome Daenerys mash-up featuring some of the Disney dragons (Figment, Elliot, and Maleficent) I knew I just had to post it. You can see more of artist Mona Collentine stuff by clicking here and can view the full sized version of the pic after the jump....

5 Reasons Why Battleship Was NOT That Bad Of A Movie: A Rant by Mike D

So last night Jeff Bond & I had a man date and caught a double feature at the movie theater, watching Battleship & The Dictator. Now I must preface this by saying that I wanted to see Battleship because I THOUGHT my good friend Glenn G had given it a high praise on Facebook after attending a special screening of the film at The Ziegfeld Theater in NYC.  Glenn wrote "This film is not as bad as people say... ITS MUCH WORSE!!!", but I thought he was giving it a compliment since I only read it quick. So on this mistake I decided to check it out... and even though Glenn (and the rest of the known world) seem to have hated it, I actually thought it was a decent pop corn action flick. I don't understand why it needed to be called "Battleship", in the sense that it was a cool alien invasion flick in the vein of Independence Day. Why tie it to a board game??? But I will get to all of that after the jump. Click read more below to see my 5 reasons why Battleship really isn't that bad....

Reason #1: The story is quite original and not half bad:

Listen, I am not saying this one is going to win the Academy Award for best original screen play. It is not revolutionary in any way. But it is not that far fetched of an idea. Scientists develop a communication device that can reach a newly discovered planet and send a signal out to try and reach intelligent life. The aliens receive the signal, and send back a small force of ships to see what Earth is all about. The base of the communication center on earth is in Hawaii, so when the aliens follow the signal back to Earth they are headed straight there. It just so happens that Hawaii is the location of the US Navy's Pacific Fleet (Pearl Harbor) and there is a naval competition going on featuring 14 nations from around the world. This puts the newly arrived aliens on a collision course with the worlds Naval forces... not really all that bad of an idea considering some of the shit I have seen concerning aliens. I love me some ID4, E.T. and Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind, but this plot doesn't seem so bad to me. And truth be told, it is not so bad. The story is hardly the problem with this one. I thought it worked out quite well.

Rhianna a marine? Get the Fuck outta here!!!!
Reason #2: This is a pretty solid cast:

I will address the most glaring point head on. Rhianna is terrible. I will give that to any critic of the cast in this flick. To see little Miss Umbrella running around as a Naval weapons expert is just too much for me. But other than her, the cast is pretty great. Alexander Skarsgard is good a a naval commander in his short time on screen, Liam Neeson is really good as the Admiral of the US Fleet. Brooklyn Decker is good eye candy, and she is  cast a a physical therapist. That means alot... usually we have to suspend belief that some super model is a nuclear scientist or some shit. But a physical therapist... yeah that is kinda believable.

One of the best parts... Brooklyn in a Bikini!!!
The rest of the supporting naval cast is pretty good, especially John Tui  (Beast), who stole all the scenes he was in. And then we have the lead: Taylor Kitsch. This kid has no luck. He has been cast in three really big budget movies that COULD have propelled him to super stardom (Wolverine: Origins, John Carter, and Battleship) and NONE of them have been received favorably. This is a shame, since Kitsch is good in all of them and has proven that he has acting chops on the Friday Night Lights TV show. I thought the cast worked well....everyone except Rhianna. She was awful.

Reason #3: The aliens are fucking cool:

Wow. Wow. Peter Berg may be accused of a lot of things with this film, but one thing that shouldn't be said is that the aliens and their ships aren't fucking cool. They look cool, they attack cool, and they are fucking cool. The ships look awesome, and when they are interacting with the naval ships there is something that Berg does very well. While he makes the alien ships superior to the naval boats, he doesn't make them completely invulnerable and unable to be harmed. Same with the mech-suited aliens. This movie may have had a 200 million dollar budget, but you can see where a lot of that me money went. The effects are wonderful, and whenever a movie like this gets bad reviews I immediately assume that the effects look shoddy and the aliens look like shit. That is not the case here. Plus, the aliens are flawed. They are not all powerful. They can be hurt, they can be beat. The Navy just has to figure out HOW to do these things. Which brings me to my next point...

Reason #4: The battles are not so unbelievable:

What is so bad with that? It doesn't fall to one miracle "Hail Mary" like Luke destroying the impenetrable Death Star with one strategically placed bomb in the ONLY weak spot on a planet sized spaceship. That is far fetched. Throughout this whole movie the Navy continually adapting their battle plan to figure out how to beat the aliens is not that hard for me to believe. So when the aliens eventually succumb to their human counterparts, it is not so hard to believe. Now don't get me wrong, there are so many far fetched elements to the aforementioned battles. One can't just drop an anchor on a mega ton war ship and not rip the hull in half, yet that happens in this movie. I am not saying everything that happens is perfectly explainable. Not many sci fi movies are so factual, even the great ones. It involves you suspending your traditional beliefs for a couple of hours why you take in the scenario in the movie. This is an alien invasion film for Christsakes. If you want believable or scientifically factual, go watch a fucking documentary . If you want a fun sci fi popcorn flick, this one could be for you

Alien bombs look like the pegs... pretty cool
Reason #5: They reference Battleship the game without making it stupid:

When I first read that this film was getting made, I immediately thought that somewhere near the end of the flick someone would stand up and say "You sunk my Battleship!!!" in reference to the famous quote from the game. That would have been terrible. And thankfully, it didn't happen. But if the movie is based on the board game, you know there had to be some references to it in the movie. But Berg does a great job of working these nods in. First off, he includes many of the famous ships from the game in the fleet of the movie. We have aircraft carriers, destroyers, smaller boats, and the all important Battleship present. This is done fairly easy because the Navy uses all of these ships. When the Navy is trying to track the aliens without radar, we get a really cool scenario where there is a huge grid on the wall of the ship and they are tracking the alien ships using weather buoys that are gridded by coordinates.  They then try and score a "hit" using the grid to predict where the enemy is. This is pretty cool and done very well, and provides a good homage to the game. Finally, the coolest nod to the game has to be the artillery that the aliens use. Their cannons shoot out these canisters that resemble the old pegs from the game. When they hit their target, they stick into the ship and then explode, similar to the way you used to stick a peg in a ship that received a hit in the game. Again, a subtle nod that is done REALLY well. None of these tings make me understand why it was important to tie the movie into the game... all of them could have appeared in a movie that was not a tie in. But they are cool ways Berg fulfilled his commitment to making a Battleship movie.

Overall, I am not saying that Battleship was some great fucking movie. Not by a longshot. But it was fun, and full of action. And the aliens looked cool. That is what a summer action movie is all about, no? I had a good time, and it was goofy fun in the same way Independence Day, Battle: Los Angeles and Men in Black were. They are fun movies with questionable plots, but they are pretty good to me. So go see it... or don't. But don't let negative reviews or preconceived ideas be the reason why you don't. There are far worse things in the theater you could be watching....

Notebook Nerd: Ball Point Pen Drawings by Jim Rugg

When I was a kid in school I often doodled in my notebook. I drew on the cover of my binder, the dividers inside it, any pretty much anything else I could. Artist Jim Rugg seems to have had the same habit... but fortunately for all of us Jim Rugg is far better at it than I was. In fact Jim's notebook sketches are so good that he is having his own art show featuring his notebook drawings. Wow. All of these pieces  are created in ball point pen and loose leaf paper. You can get more information on the show (which opens on May 25th)  by clicking here, but after the jump you will see some of my personal faves...

Bad Liutenant

Pee Wee's Big Adventure

MCA Takes On The X-Men by Steven Howard

I am still having a hard time dealing with the fact that MCA of the Beastie Boys is dead and gone. It is just such a crushing blow to my childhood, and I regret not being able to see the Boys in concert ever again. But things like this comic strip celebrate his life and make missing him a bit easier. Artist Steven Howard depicts MCA in a very "Fight For Your Rights" moment with two of the most famous X-Men, Cyclops & Wolverine. These guys are not to be trifled with, but MCA lets em have it Beastie style!!! Check out the full comic strip after the jump...

Hobbits Be Crazy: Check Out Elijah Wood In The New Trailer For 'Maniac'

'Maniac' was one of the craziest movies ever made, and way back in 1980 helped jump start the slasher genre. The movie had iconic VHS box art and was a staple of any horror fan who rented movies from their local mom & pop video shop. The unique Point Of View shots and the awesome early special effects of Tom Savini all made the film quite perfect. So when I heard that they were going to remake the film, as a true horror fan I was a little skeptical. Especially when they added the hobbit man himself Elijah Wood as the title character... how the fuck was Frodo going to scare anybody? Well, one way to get this one right is to add Alejandre Aja to the mix as a producer. The guy is one of the few people in the horror industry who gets it, and has a very strong tie to the original films in this classic genre. The second thing to do would be to release a red band trailer showing Mr. Wood acting "Maniacal"... and holy shit it works!!! Check out the trailer after the jump for proof that even Hobbits can be serial killers...
