A Usagi Yojimbo Film Is On The Way... Watch The Short That Got The Filmmakers Permission From Stan Sakai To Make It!

My earliest memories of Usagi Yojimbo come from the TMNT cartoon series of the early 90s. I loved that show, and Stan Sakai's samurai bunny rabbit was always a highlight for me. He is so serious, and such an absolute badass... so when I was able to read some of the Yojimbo comic stories later in life I found them amazing! Sakai's art is also spectacular, and the stories are true samurai epics even though they feature talking animals. So when my buddy Tommy Lombardozzi (who is a huge Usagi  fan) sent me a new short film that was created in order to secure the confidence of Sakai in making a full length feature. Lintika Films presents Usagi Yojimbo: The Last Request. It is really well done, and Sakai was so blown away that he gave his blessing for them to move forward with a full length feature. Teenage Mutant Ninja X-Men by M7781

I came across artists m7781 (Marco D'Alfonso) over on Reddit due to his awesome Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and X-men mashup that is making the rounds on the Internet. When I moseyed on over to his Deviant Art page I found an incredible collection of art mashups of pop culture characters that will make your head spin. There are a bunch of good ones, but I still find myself rotating back to the TMNT/X-Men one the most. What a great piece. Leo as Cyclops (the leader), Donatello as Beast (the scientist), Mikey as Iceman (the funny guy) and Raphael as Wolverine (the maniac). We also get April as Jubilee (they did rock the same colors!), Casey Jones as Cable, and my personal favorite side character Metalhead as Colossus. Pretty amazing. Lets hope m7781 decides to do a Brotherhood of Evil Mutants/Footclan mashup.... Shredder as Magneto? Kang as The Blob? Rocksteady & Bebop as Pyro & Avalanche? Yup... that would be great! You See... Michael Bay Isn't So Bad, He Is A Perfectionist !!!

You gotta love The Onion. Those guys know how to exploit a situation. When the 2014 SD Comic Con rolled around people from every news outlet, both reputable and unreasonable, flocked to Cali to cover it. But while all of these people were trying to gets scoops, attend panels, and  be the first ones with some sort of "news"... The Onion just does what it does best: Make shit up that sounds good enough to fool people to be true!!! First they leaked a great story about a new "Green Goblin" that would be left handed... and people all thought it was true. Then they outdid even themselves... they created this amazing behind the scenes documentary that captures the in depth nature that Michael Bay goes to in ensuring that everything is factually correct in any films he is associated with. Everything... down to the turtle cocks in his newly produced TMNT film!!!! Hol-y SHIT, this is amazing!!! And they even had to CGI the fake dongs in order for the footage for the faux behind the scenes feature... which means the footage is in fact REAL (if you follow my logic anyway...). Yup, this is great. The Onion, never stop being the best at what you do....

Gallery Nucleus Presents: Heroes In A Half Shell - A Tribute To The 30th Anniversary of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

I am always on the lookout for cool pop culture art shows that are held around the country... after all, other than Bottleneck Galleries in Brooklyn we have very few places in NYC that conduct shows of that nature. But through the magic of the Internet we not only get to view the pieces of these shows, but we have access to PURCHASE prints and original pieces of all this great stuff! Gallery Nucleus is located in Alhambra, California and is currently executing one hell of a show. It is called 'Heroes In A Half Shell' and is meant to pay tribute to the 30th Anniversary of our favorite crime fighting reptiles (yup, turtles are reptiles... why don't you go to science class!). On the cusp of the release of the new live action TMNT film, this show highlights all the classic characters as well as some of the rarer ones from the many iterations the property has been through (Fish Face seems abundantly more popular than he should be as a subject). There are over 30 artists in the show, and it also features sponsorship tie ins to the cartoon and IDW comics. There are giveaways, door prizes and the best part is that anyone that shows up in costume gets in free!!! The pieces vary in style and execution, and there are even some non-print pieces (a skate deck, stuffed animals, and scultures) to spice things up. Now that is one show I wish I lived on the Left Coast for!!! The show runs until August 3rd, but if you can't make it in then make sure you pop by the Gallery Nucleus webpage to peruse the art and maybe make some Turtle-Tastic purchases. Eastman & Laird Both Coming Back To IDW's 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' For A 30th Anniversary Issue ??? YES PLEASE !!!!

One of my favorite NY Comic Con experiences happened about 5 years ago with my good friend Sam James. Sam and I were walking the floor and he is a huge TMNT guy. So he sees Peter Laird of TMNT fame and starts going bonkers. He runs over to the table and buys a lithograph from Mr. Laird, which he is super happy about. As we started around the floor again, Sam mentioned that he wanted to meet Kevin Eastman, the other man responsible for TMNT... who was also somewhere at the show. As we sought him out I wondered out loud why he wasn't near Laird's table, considering how their creations were so related. Sam explained that they had a huge falling out and that they didn't really like each other much. That made the situation funnier and much more understandable. When we found Eastman, Sam asked him to sign the same lithograph... he explained to Eastman it would be an honor to have both guys signatures on one piece. Eastman promptly said "This is the shitty pieces Laird is selling at his table? I ain't signing that...". But he wasn't a complete dick, he did one better... he turned over the lithograph and did a full on Leonardo sketch right there on the spot. When he finished, he looked up at our shocked faces and said something to the effect of "Fuck Laird... now you got your very own TMNT original, not some generic piece of shit". He signed it, and so Sam was faced with the dilemma of getting both signatures on a piece, albeit one on each side... lol. This was first hand proof that these guys despised each other. So imagine my surprise when I opened my email and see that both Eastman & Laird will be working together on a 30th anniversary one shot issue that will feature a bunch of one off stories about the green foursome. I for one couldn't be any happier...

The book will be a 48 page full color one off that features some of the creative talent responsible for 30 years of TMNT goodness such as Eastman, Laird, Dean Clarrain, Chris Allan, Tom Waltz and Dan Duncan... the stories will hit on various eras of Turtle history. The book doesn't have an official release date yet, but I am sure that it will coincide with the August 2014 movie release that is rapidly approaching. I am excited, and being a day one comic fan boy of the property I will be pre-ordering my issue. Glad to see that the guys are able to put their differences aside in celebration of the great characters they created all those years ago! You can see the full press release below...

The Top 20 Flubs Of The 80s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles by Cinemassacre

The original 80s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon may be one of the most important cartoons in the history of animation. Why? Well, the early 80s brought us Transformers, Voltron, He-Man, Thundercats, and Gi Joe... the holy quinrilogy of all time great cartoons. But it was TMNT who ushered in the next decade of animation dominance, and some would say would achieve a greater cross over success than any of those previous 4. Everybody knew and loved the Turtles. Older fans loved the gritty Black & White comics. Younger guys & gals alike loved the goofiness of the cartoon. But like anything great, there must be some flubs and mistakes. I always like watching animation mistake reels, because you never notice this stuff when watching the shows in the first run. 'Ninja Turtles: An Animated Tribute' by Malcolm S

I love me some Ninja Turtles, and it seems that animator Malcolm S loves them too. How do I know? Because he created a bad ass animated tribute to the 4 green machines and their rat mentor Splinter that gets back to the roots of the characters (for one thing there are no face bandannas... like the first comic book). The 1st Ever TMNT Sketch Fetches $71,000 At Auction

I have always been a huge fan of the original black & white drawings of Kevin Eastman & Peter Laird of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I was dismayed when I went by my local comic shop (Excalibur Comics on 20th ave in BK, whatup!!!) and saw that Malibu Comics has released a FULL COLOR reprint version of the 1st issue. It takes away from the original B&W styling that I know lots of true Turtle fans hold very dear. So when I came across the story about the 1st ever sketch of the Turtles by their creators being sold at auction for $71,000. Check out the sketch and explanation of how it all happened way back in 1983 after the jump...

Here is the explanation of the sketch by Kevin Eastman via Bleeding Cool: 

“Late in November 1983, Peter Laird and I were sharing a studio (our living room) in Dover, New Hampshire. One work night, in an effort to make Peter laugh, I drew a sketch of this character I called a “Ninja Turtle” and threw it onto Peter’s desk. He did laugh, and did a version of his own — to which I needed to take it one step further, and did a pencil sketch of four different Turtles, each holding a different weapon — and gave it to Peter, who wanted to ink it in — and when he did, he added “Teenage Mutant” to the “Ninja Turtle” part of the logo, and we both fell off our chairs!”

“The next day, we both looked at the drawing, and decided that we really needed to come up with a story about how these characters came to be — and began to hammer out the story details. Deciding to make it an homage/parody to some of our heroes and inspirations — (and dedicating it to them) — we worked through the winter of 1983-84, and after finding a local New England printer, we borrowed money from my Uncle Quentin, and we printed the first 3,000 copies — premiering the book at a local Portsmouth comic convention May 5th, 1984.

From that day forward, and for the next thirty years, the TMNTs became a world wide phenomenon (cartoons, toys, and movies) that even to this day we still try to completely understand — and it all started with this drawing… ”

The piece should be familiar to most any Turtles fan, as it’s been reprinted many times over the years. It was sent out in the original press release package back in 1984 and found its way into much of the early press coverage. It was also shown in the First Comics graphic novel in 1986, a special edition reprint of the first issue from 1992, and as a pin-up in some of the Mirage black and white issues.

Eastman, Kevin:Kevin Eastman is the co-creator of the wildly successful Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. In between “TMNT” projects, he established the “Words and Pictures Museum of Cartoon Art”, created an artist friendly publishing company, “Tundra Publishing” where projects like “The Crow” “From Hell” and “American Splendor” first flourished, and purchased world renowned “Heavy Metal Magazine.”

A CCD Rant by Mike D: Hey Fanboys & Fellow Internet Blowhards: Leave Michael Bay Alone!!!

Hehehehe... I know that the title of my upcoming rant ALONE is enough to make nerds everywhere spill their Red Bull all over their wireless keyboards as they gasp in horror. Plus, I think I just heard Jeff Bond drop dead of a heart attack at his job, and possibly an earthquake from the explosion of anger from Kristen Grillo out on the West Coast!!! But before I get into my latest rant, let me preface this by saying something right off the bat: 


I, Michael DeVito, am not a Bay apologist and could give a fuck less what he does as a professional. 

I am simply writing this rant because while most internet Fan boys & self proclaimed 'GEEKS' who should be more intelligent than they appear to be need to shut the fuck up. Stop blaming Michael Bay for all the problems that happen in the adaptions he is a part of. Transformers may not be your cup of tea, but it certainly wasn't made by Bay himself. Now there is this flap about what Bay said about the new TMNT movie that will contain Turtles that are of an "alien" origin. Hey gang, I got news for you: If this is true, it PROBABLY WASN'T BAY'S IDEA IN THE FIRST PLACE , NOR IS IT HIS IDEA ALONE!!!! What the fuck is wrong with you people?

 This is a multi million dollar movie production based on a BILLION dollar comic/cartoon/toy/movie line. How the fuck can you blame any choices in the film solely on Michael Bay. You need a few arguments to see why Michael Bay shouldn't be blamed for all this shit? Here ya go...

First of all, he is a producer on the movie. Kind of like the overseerer. He in fact has little to do with the direction of the script and the performance of the actors. None actually. That kind of stuff falls on the screenwriters, the casting directors, and the directors. Not the fucking producer. Just cause he is the one who mentioned it doesn't mean it's his wish. He is after all only the producer, right? The reason why I say this is because people often malign Bay for his interpretation of The Transformers (on which he was the director), yet give Steven Spielberg a pass on his involvement in The Transformers because he was just the producer. How come Spielberg gets the pass, but now when Bay is in the role of producer it is his fault? The producer does have influence on picking the director, screenwriter, and the cast... so one may want to blame Bay for picking a gang that would fuck with the Turtles origin. But to blame HIM as the guy who is tinkering with the story while the people who ARE ACTUALLY fucking with said origin get a pass just seems a bit silly. If Spielberg gets no blame for Transformers, stay consistent when Bay is now in the producer seat. Just cause Bay is an easy target doesn't mean you have to shoot at him, ya dig?

Original Issue #1

Next lets talk about the franchise itself. The turtles are beloved. I get that. No prob there. But lets be honest about THIS particular franchise. When Eastman & Laird brought the Turtles to us in comic format they were lean, mean fighting machines. The comic was gritty, brutal, the turtles wore the same red bandannas, and black & white. People got hurt & killed in every issue, violence was rampant, and the characters weren't very cheery. THAT IS THE REALITY OF THE ORIGINAL COMIC. Trust me, I am an ORIGINAL fan. Yet when the late 80s cartoon was made, they jettisoned all of this for colorful bandannas, cooky catch phrases, and goofy hi jinks. That worked out well, as Eastman & Laird signed off on the whole thing and it made a shit ton of cash!!! The franchise grew huge, spawning toys, live action movies, and spin off cartoons. Yet at the end of the day people easily forget how much was CHANGED from the original to the incarnation we know best. I have NEVER ONCE heard a complaint over those changes... yet now cause Bay is involved the story needs to be exact? Come the fuck on... if anything, this new Bay produced version promises to emulate the original darker comic series more. So instead of applauding the resurrection of the true styles of the characters, we are crying over one small detail. Seems a bit silly when you think of it like that, no?

I bet you don't remember Leonardo the Decapitator  from the cartoon either...smh!

And that brings me to Eastman & Laird, the original CREATORS of the characters and owners of the rights. Both have spoken out on the topic of Bay's alien origin comments, and while their opinions vary they both seem to side with Michael Bay. Eastman said he loves everything he has seen so far from the remake and thinks Bay & the gang are doing a smashing job getting the franchise back to its roots. Laird was a bit less enthusiastic, but did say that he trust Bay & co completely and  that maybe we should wait to see just how drastic these changes are before we call Bay a traitor. So let me get this straight: The two guys who own teh rights to the billion dollar franchise and created the characters from scratch are OK with it, but the'Net dwelling trolls with no objectivity are against it.... Hmmmm, I think I'll go with the creators on this one. Not really a tough choice. I have long defended Lucas, not for the changes he has made but more for the fact that THEY WERE HIS CHOICES TO MAKE!!! His property, his characters, his changes. You don't like that? Create your own fucking billion dollar property!!! Then you can do whatever you want. If Eastman & Laird are collecting checks and seem to be A-OK with this proposed alien origin, who the fuck are YOU to question them? Spend less time complaining and more time getting your OWN ideas on paper so you can make some money...

Look at these two goofs. they are multi millionaires because of anthropomorphic turtles. if they are OK with changes, why aren't you? They are laughing all the way to the bank.... 

Finally, stop over analyzing every little thing about everything. It's corny now. Yes, I run a pop culture blog. And yes, some of the stuff that we cover here appears on a billion other blogsites across the 'Net. But I have made a conscious effort to use CCD to promote interesting & under promoted projects instead of all the mainstream stories, especially months in advance of the films even releasing. While I am eagerly awaiting films like The Dark Knight Rises, The Avengers, and The Hunger Games, I haven't posted a billion things about them because it ruins the anticipation. How many international trailers featuring 2 seconds of new shots do you need to watch? How many stories about who Joesph Gordon Levitt will be in the Batman movie do I have to endure? Just wait till the movie is almost out, or at least complain about CONFIRMED things. Leave the reporting to sites like /Film and Ain't it Cool News, who have real sources and access to sets long before a movie comes out. Save the speculation & criticism for after YOU SEE THE FILM. That way your complaints will have a certain validity & you won't sound like the whiny over 30 year old  babies you guys probably are.

In closing, I say this:

Do something creative on your blogs...like post pics of hot up and coming celeb chicks, celebrate the music of the Wu Tang Clan, or reminisce about 80's Toys (Like CCD Baby!!!!)... or rant like this. Leave Michael Bay alone. He has enough money & power in Hollywood to not give a fuck. But if one of you trolls read this and see the light. Then my work here is done!!!!

The TMNT Cartoon Opening Credits Get A Stop Motion Makeover... Cowabunga!!!

Kyle Roberts is a talented director who wanted to shoot something that would remind him of his childhood. Nathan Poppe is an artist that was down to help out... so he hand drew 60 images to help create a stop motion version of the 1987 TMNT cartoon. Add in a decent cover of the title song by The Boom Bang and you got one hell of a 2 minute video. I know I would be proud of it. Roberts is talented, and the video is filled with tons of little winks and cliches that make it totally awesome.  Plus they got to use the newer Mecca TMNT figures, which are completely bad ass and look so much like the original comic book designs. Artin' It Up With Tommy Lombardozzi: Turtle Power Edition

Hey folks. It's been awhile since I've shared any art with good ol' CCD, but here I am! Back again and ready to... dosomething!

So, a few days ago, I came across a new comic shop in my neighborhood. EXCALIBUR COMICS, on 20th Avenue and 74th Street in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. Exciting! There hasn't been a comic store around here in YEARS! Anyway... 


The place is in its infancy; not too much back stock, some toys and do-dads (cool Ghostbusters shit that if I had the money I'd buy), etc. Anyway, I picked up a few comics. The latest issue of the newest ongoing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series by IDW Publishing, a TMNT Donatello one-shot, the latest issues of one of my favorite comics of all time, USAGI YOJIMBO, and a Ghostbusters comic. Fun stuff!

Anyway, when I got home and leafed through the books, I was inspired to draw. Woooha! I decided to do a Ninja Turtles piece, just like I used to do back in 1989 and 1990! I used to be a huge fan of the ORIGINAL, black & white Mirage Studios'  series. The classic! Where it all began! So, I modeled my drawing on those old school books (especially when it came time to the coloring phase.) Also, I don't think I've ever drawn a group shot of the Turtles... I was always either too lazy or too unskilled. The latter may still be the case, but I did it anyway.

So, without further din, I present to you this new piece I call "TMNT" (very original!)... in two versions! The initial black & white pen marker drawing, and then a digitally colored version (which took me about 2 days to finish. I don't have a tablet, so I have to do it all by mouse. It's a very long process.)

The Comic Twart Team Takes On Usagi Yojimbo

I have always been a huge fan of Stan Sakai's rabbit samurai Usagi Yojimbo. I mean, how can you not be. The comics are always well written and well drawn, and the character itself is the picture of a true hero if there ever was one. I also always loved it when he was featured in cahoots with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Those were some wonderful adventures. Tom Fowler (one of CCD's favorite artists) and the rest of his Comic Twart brethren have all taken there artistic chances with Usagi, and frankly I think these are absolutely wonderful.
