Political Villains x Comic Book Villains by Billy Butcher

I have featured Billy Butcher's works here on CCD many times before (check here and here), but this latest batch that I have come across are just special. Butcher takes some of the most controversial political villains, mashes them up with some of the worst comic book villains of all time... and truthfully, the physical resemblances are just too much to ignore (tell me that Mao isn't spot on). These are pretty fantastic! I had to laugh a bit inside (call it my inner liberal) to see George W. Bush included among these heathens, but it is not too much of a stretch to see why Butcher would put him in the group. Check out more of Butcher's work over at his website and check out all of the Political Villains after the jump...

Video Throwback - Robot Chicken: Villain Carpool

Reading Carpool Buddies of Doom the other day really made me laugh... laugh out loud. So I decided to share that over on my Facebook page, and the reaction was great. But in the comments one of my good buddies Edson posted a similar concept that was executed by Robot Chicken way back in 2005. It was called 'Villain Carpool', and featured claymation versions of Cobra Commander, Skeletor, Lex Luthor and Mumm-Ra on a hellish ride to work. They deal with the monotony of everyday life in the only way they know how... by being EVVVVVVIIIIILLLLLL! This is so great.... especially Lex Luthor. He kills. Maybe not the direct inspiration for 'Carpool of Doom' but, a very similarly great idea. I forgot how great of a show Robot Chicken really was. Might have to go back and dig into the crates to see what else they got stashed away....

The Horror Anthology TV Show 'Monsters' FINALLY Gets A Home Video Release

Wow... it's about time!!!! One of my favorite childhood TV shows is finally getting a box set, and it can't be soon enough! 'Monsters' aired back in the late 80's (88-91) and ran for three seasons ...to a total of 72 episodes. It was conceived in the vein of 'The Twilight Zone' & 'Tales From The Darkside', which it shared a producer with. The show was a week-to-week, self-contained horror fest that featured original stories as well as adaptions from great horror writers such a Stephen King and Robert Bloch. And it also featured a bunch of young actors BEFORE they were famous, such as Steve Buschemi, Tony Shaloub and Gina Gershon. It also featured one of the best introduction scenes in the history of TV... and if you don't remember it, check it out after the jump! Now the show is finally going to get the box set treatment, coming at the end of Feb 2014. I, for one, will be buying this one. I can't wait to share these scares with my 10 year old son.... I was his age when the show aired ...and I loved it. So I am interested to see if he likes it. Check out some clips after the jump...

Intro:

You can stream a bunch of full episodes on The Monsters TV Youtube, but this remains one of my faves!

Star Trek - An Animated Script by Breaking Bad's Badger Mayhew

One of the highlights of Breaking Bad's last season for me has to be Brandon 'Badger' Mayhew's proposed Star Trek script that he disclosed when he was high on crystal meth. This was a gem of script writing by Vince Gilliam, because he squeezed a funny homage to a nerd property into a probable conversation that two 20 something meth heads might have. So animator Matt Czap decided to animate the story and what we get is a spectacularly bizarre 2 minute Star Trek tale featuring Kirk, Spock and all the rest of the beloved crew of the Enterprise... even Uhuru and her "big pointees" (what a great line). Very funny stuff... you can see more of Czap's work over on Eat That Toast. Check the Star Trek video after the jump...

Carpool Buddies Of Doom by Justin Jordan & Rafer Roberts

Web comics are killing it right now... and why wouldn't they? They are super easy to upload and distribute to the masses, and once one gets a bit of traction on Reddit, Tumblr or one of the other sharing websites it just tends to snowball. Last week we highlighted a killer take on Batman called The Deal, and this week we take a funny look at 'Carpool Buddies of Doom'. Carpool Buddies focuses on the daily commute of two of the worst villains in the history of comics, Thanos and Darkseid. It is smartly written by Justin Jordan and illustrated by Rafer Roberts. Pretty great... and in the second installment they throw in Doctor Doom to the group to make things even funnier! Great find by my main man Cal, and I will certainly be looking out for more to come from the duo on their site. Check out the first two installments after the jump....

It's such a bizarre concept that I had to share it here.
The artwork just improves the writing as it should.

Great Comics Revisited: The Rocket Raccoon Mini Series (1985)

I am someone who can't read comics month to month anymore... I can't bear to wait four weeks to continue a story, and 22 pages of an issue just don't satisfy me. So I usually let storylines build up and then read collected editions to get caught back up. I also like to back and read the classics that laid the groundwork for some of the stories being told today. So recently I decided to revisit a mini series from the golden era of comics... well, the golden era to me anyway... 1985. It is the Rocket Raccoon mini series, published in 1985 and introducing the character of Rocket to a wide spread audience in his own book for the first time. The series was written by Bill Mantlo, and the art comes courtesy of a young Mike Mignola (pencils) and Al Gordon (inks). I must have read this as a kid as the story seemed familiar to me, but I honestly can't remember... and boy does that make me sad! This is such a great series, for a variety of reasons.

Check more after the jump...

First of, this is when Marvel had fun with their characters. It was not the age of continuity police, constantly posting on chat boards about the shade of characters costume being different issue to issue or if a character should know someone based on past interactions... The creators had room to breathe. It's not that the comic geeks weren't up on things like continuity... it was just harder for people express their general malaise. Rocket's mini series perfectly illustrates all that is good with comics in the 80s. Fun art, goofy stories, and some legit groundwork for the future of the company. Rocket is about to become a household name with next years Guardians of the Galaxy. People are going to go crazy for the little fur ball. This is where it all began. And boy is it good...

The story revolves around Rocket Raccoon and his group of anthropomorphic (talking) animal friends, and how they act as a type of super hero team on Halfworld in the Keystone Quadrant of Outer Space. Two evil toy makers (it sounds stupid, but is really genius) are locked in a corporate struggle to control the making of the toy robots that entertain the crazy people who occupy Halfworld. But one of these toy makers, a mole by the name of Judson Jakes and his accomplice, the evil genius turtle is out to take over the whole Keystone Quadrant. And to do so he needs to find and decode Gideon's Bible, an ancient book that was written by a long lost race of people (probably humans who visited Halfworld) and is unintelligible to the intelligent animal population. Apparently the book contains secrets that will  help whoever deciphers it become a supreme leader. Rocky tries to keep the book safe, and out of the hands of the murderous Jakes.

There are two things that make these books great. First off, the art on the covers and interiors are just amazing. I love Mignola's style, but this is his early stuff so it varies a bit from the prototypical style we are used to seeing from him on Hellboy and other projects he worked in the past. The second thing is the cool animal tales. I dig these kind of stories. One of my favorite comic books ever is Captain Carrot and the Amazing Zoo Crew, which was published around the same time by DC Comics and tells a similar story. These books are fun, and a change of pace from super hero books that were the majority of the landscape at this time. Isn't comics being fun a big part of reading them in the first place?

The story is a fun one shot, and the four issues are able to be read as a stand alone. It is a great starting point for anyone not really familiar with Rocket, and I definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to know much more about the back story of such a great character... especially in lieu of the Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Great trip back down memory lane, and well worth the 5 bucks that I spent on the hardcover at this years NY Comic Con. You can grab it on Amazon for (albeit for a bit more than 5 bucks) by cliciking here...

Marvel x Star Wars by Robert Shane

I have seen a few really cool mash ups with characters owned by Disney and the Star Wars characters ever since the merger of the two conglomerates last year, but none are more interesting than the few that artist Robert Shane have thrown together. Robert decided to attack the mash ups through the aspect of the Marvel branch of Disney... and boy did he give it a hell of an effort! He choose three candidates (Iron Man, Doctor Doom and Nick Fury) and found great counterparts from the Star Wars universes for them (Storm Troopers, Darth Vader, and Mace Windu) in his pieces. These are absolutely amazing, and my fave has to be the Doctor Doom/Darth Vader one. Great execution of a great idea... no matter how obvious the connections may be! Shane still had to execute them, and he did so to perfection. Check out all of his cool ass art here over at his Deviant Art page, and see the three Marvel x Star Wars pieces after the jump...

Super Power Beat Down: Wolverine vs Predator... And A Added Bonus Feature Too!!!!

As usual I was watching something else on You Tube and this clip appeared and I just had to see what it was about. It's part of a series called 'Super Power Beat Down' that takes two characters and sees who would win a battle between the two. This is just the kind of arguments fans of the comics and movies have all the time. It was fun to see someone take the concept one step further and actually stage the battles with special effects and great sets and costumes. Check out more after the jump...

Now in this clash, of course Wolverine would beat the Predator. The healing factor alone is the game changer, not to mention Wolvie's Adamantium skeleton and claws. He's practically one of the Predators already.

That being said, I was impressed with this Wolverine vs Predator film. It's a great concept done very well. I haven't watched any of the other films in the series but I will and share them here. You gotta love these digital times we live in. It's pretty cool what people can do on a low budget these days. All you need is some enthusiasm and creativity and we are off to the races.

Oh and that amazing looking girl who hosts the whole thing is Marisha Ray. Wow.

Aside from being a spokesperson for all things geek, the beautiful Marisha also found time to be in a little Batgirl movie called 'Spoiled'. Again I am amazed at what people with a love for these characters can do with a some cosplay outfits and a digital video recorder.

Geek Construction Done Right - Man At Arms: Mjolnir

Man At Arms is a cool series that allows a master blacksmith Tony Swatton a chance to hone his craft and apply it to weaponry from geek culture. He has made a ton of weapons for movies, TV shows, and much more... and Awe Me has decided to create a web series based on his cool ass creations, and they are fantastic. I have watched about 7 of them already... but the one that is most recent has the most baring on current events. Thor is hot right now thanks to The Dark World, and Swatton makes a copy of Mjolnir that is just crazy! It is hollow, yet still weighs TWENTY POUNDS!!!! Good lawd! Not this is not the first time we have seen replica weapons made. Our good buddies over at Skelton Key Studios have killed many a replica (check out where we featured them here and here)... but those were not PRACTICAL weapons in the sense that they were fakes that just looked really great. These are usable weapons being made by Swatton... just check the video for proof of that. Make sure you check out all the videos they have, and check out the Mjolnir list after the jump...
