CCD Interviews: Live From The 2014 NY Comic Con Floor - Sidekick Trading Card Publishing

I love it when we are walking the floor of the NY Comic Con and come across something quite unique. So when I saw a man operating a hand operated printing press in The Block area, making up ink images of the Millennium Falcon on dictionary pages... wait, what... I knew I had to stop in and see what was up!  Yup, the gang over at Sidekick Trading Card Publishing were doing all types of fun stuff at their booth, and proprietor Tom Litchman had no problem bringing us into the world of vintage printing presses and wax packs of cards that was the Sidekick booth. The antique press that they brought to the show was insane 95 year old Chandler & Price hand fed platinum press and it was a show stopper for sure! People were staring in awe as Tom was banging out print after hand rolled print to the enjoyment of all that stopped to watch. It was epic...

The company has a variety of these old fashion presses back home in Vermont and make all types of prints. They were selling 2 specific ones that were Comic Con friendly, both Groot & Darth Vader on a vintage stock stamp ranging in 4 x 6 to huge poster size... and the price points were extremely low (aka customer friendly!).

Their bread and butter are wax pack trading cards sets. Some of these are sets that are near and dear to Tom's interests (The Mars Lander series) and others are collaborations with famous artists like Sucklord. These things take you right back to the 80s... and they even sell a "make your own wax pack" series in which you can create your own trading card series!!! These guys are awesome, and we had a great time interviewing them. After we were done, Tom and the guys hooked us up with a ton of prints, packs of cards and general goodness... all on the HOUSE!!!! These guys are fantastic.

Topps Trading Cards Sure Know How To Celebrate A 25th Anniversary... Check Out The 'Major League' 25th Anniversary Wax Packs!!!

Baseball card collecting was at an all time high during the early 80s when I was a kid, and I certainly was no stranger to the whole phenomenon. There was something special about buying packs of cards and hoping that you had one of the special ones among your haul. The Topps trading card company was always a leader in the industry, and they also were the company behind the trading card bonanza that was Garbage Pail Kids. So its no surprise that they are the perfect company to help fans celebrate the 25th anniversary of one of my favorite sports movies ever, 'Major League'. The movie starred Corbin Bersen, Charlie Sheen, Tom Berenger, Renee Russo, Dennis Heysberth, Wesley Snipes, and many more... and it is widely considered one of the best baseball movies ever. Topps is offering a special wax pack of cards (5 total cards) featuring the films most famous characters. As an added bonus, there is a special 'Jobu the voodoo doll' additional insert card. The price may seem a bit steep at $12.99, but with 6 total cards that is just over 2 bucks a piece. Not so bad when you considered how custom these are. The Captain America Trading Card Collection Of Agent Coulson...

One of the hidden gem moments of the Avengers had to be the conversation between Agent Coulson and Captain America when they first meet face to face. Coulson is a complete Cap fanboy, and he is trying his best to maintain his composure while being confronted with a childhood icon of his. He tells Cap that he watched him while he slept... which leads to a very awkward silence that is very funny.  The conversation delves into an area where they are discussing a vintage trading card collection that Coulson possess that features Cap... and Cap shows an interest in the fact that such a trading card collection exists. This thrills Coulson, and Clark Gregg plays the little kid trapped in a grown mans body perfectly. Brother Postma Nails It Again - Rankin Bass Style Star Wars Trading Cards

Having fun with the Rankin Bass puppets and Star Wars. Just imagine if they did some Star Wars special for TV, that would be amazing! But we have to live with the Christmas special instead, Oh well. At least you get a peak a what could have happened instead of wondering "what if ?". Check them all out after the jump....

I think everything Phil Postma touches turns to gold. I would love to see this series of animated movies get produced in the old Rankin Bass style which, we can all agree, has turned a bit stale after 50 odd years of the same Christmas specials.
