A To Z Blogger Challenge: Day 9 - I Is For Immortals

Hey gang. Day 9 is underway, and I thought I would pick a more modern movie that I truly enjoyed as the topic for today's pick. Immortals by Tarsem Singh was a visually stunning film... but it is also exactly what I hope for from a film coming out of Hollywood these days. Why? Well, it is simply the originality vs remake/reboot argument. Greek Mythology has been used in films a ton... making a film based on Greek mythology wouldn't necessarily be original. Yet Tarsem takes a few familiar characters from the mythology books and then crafts a truly original story out of it. On the other hand you have Clash of the Titans 1 & 2, marketed as a remake/reboot of an early 80s classic that isn't even very similar to the original at all. The studio took a new version of the story of Perseus and instead of calling 'War of The Gods' and having it be original, they slapped the 'Clash' name on it and shoe horned in some nods to the first film in the hopes of cashing in. It is sad. Anyway, Immortals is one of those rare moments when a director gets to make 'his or her' movie, and it works for me. The future Superman, Henry Cavill, is great. Mickey Rourke is a fantastic bad guy. But the highlight from a woman's standpoint has to be the lovely Freida Pinto as the oracle priestess Phaedra. She gives a solid performance and looks fantastic, and she fits the look of the film that Singh strives to achieve with the film to a T. If you haven't seen this one, get on it. It is pretty great. Star Wars/Super Mario mash-ups can never lose the race with me. And 'Banana Trap' is just that.

'Never Forget These Groceries' rekindles thought of one of my favorite Sesame Street skits.....  "Loaf of bread....container of milk....stick of butter..........loaf of bread....a container of milk.....and a stick of butter!" I was repeating that around the house for years after I first saw it!

'All Hands On Deck' reminded me of my brother, Cal from the frozen north's Canadian Cave of Cool. I like to think this is his dreaded enemy attacking one of the cave's many secret entrances...a secluded beach lighthouse. Good luck with all of THAT, buddy!

I'm pretty sure 'Diggin Anatomy' includes my favorite little (quite possibly dead) black boy from the the downloadable game 'Limbo'. If so...I heart this design. It's a push and shove in the winning direction.

Just caught 'Immortals' in theaters and this mythologically inspired t-shirt design, 'Ancient Matador', is probably based as much in the original Greek tale as the film is. Both are a bunch of bull...both are kick-ass, though!

I should have known that Jesus was a Trekkie. 'Peace & Love Earthlings' is the blasphemous design that phasers-in the truth.

Winnie Smalls does Biggie justice in this Disney/Rap inspired design...'Mo Honey Mo Problems'. He's got 99 problems and poor stitch-ing's one! (See what I did there, Mike?)

'Campfire' has some behemoths slow-roasting the Ghostbuster baddie by an open city fire. I like to think those 2 are the characters from the iconic video game 'Rampage'...and than that leads me to envision a playable Stay Pufft Marshmallow Man for said classic game. This could be this week's top design! in fact...it is!

Immortals, The Alternative To Clash Of The Titans

When they rebooted the 'Clash of the Titans' franchise, I was a bit confused. While I loved the original (sure it was cheesy... but it was great!!!) I didn't see the need to rehash the story. That was not the first time a version of Greek Mythology had been told on the big screen, and surely it wouldn't be the last. Then the reboot came out, and the story was completely different then the original. So why share the title? That made me confused as well. Then I heard news of visionary director, Tarsem, wanting to take on the Greek Mythology angle for his next movie... and I knew that I would get my wish. Looks like this one will be a good one!

Here is the official synopsis for the film:
This past weekend at Wondercon 2011 Tarsem introduced 5 new posters featuring key characters from the film. Henry Cavill, the new Superman, will be the lead hero named Theseus. His main adversary will be King Hyperion, played by Mickey Rourke. The posters that were released are of Theseus and four of the gods featured in the film. Enjoy:

In Immortals, the ruthless King Hyperion (Rourke) leads his bloodthirsty army on a murderous rampage across Greece to find a deadly weapon that will destroy humanity. A mortal chosen by Zeus named Theseus (Cavill) must lead the fight against Hyperion and his evil army with the fate of mankind and the Gods at stake.
