Our next contributor to step up to the plate is Kate Jones, whose True Bloody Love (True Blood) & Reality Check (Reality TV) recap columns keep everybody in the loop on whats going on. Since True Blood is outta season right now, we are waiting for Mrs. Jones to get a new obsession so we can be privy to some more of her excellent insights. One thing she won't be writing about will be horror movies, because she F'n hates scary movies!!! Despite the fact that she is not a huge horror fan (at all), she as a good sport and participated anyway. With no further ado, I present My 3 Favorite Scary Movies Of All Time: Kate Jones Edition!!!
Se7en (1995) - Hands down, one of the best movies I have EVER seen. Incredible acting, tons of visual grossness and an incredible storyline. I saw this at about the same time as Usual Suspects and was completely amazed by all things Kevin Spacey after that. Just total awesomeness...and creepiness.
The Shining (1980) - Nothing is creepier than the idea that a normal guy could go completely bonkers and try to kill the people he loves the most. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy...
The Ring (2002) - Wow... Kids are freaky! That girl was DAMN scary. I think that might have actually been the last scary movie I saw just based on that crazy girl climbing out of the television at the end of the movie. Also, my friends ex boyfriend calling my house phone just as the movie finished MAY have damaged me.
I have to totally agree that The Shining is one of the top horror/suspense movies of all time. There is nothing creepier then those damn twins.....I get the chills just thinking about them.
ReplyDelete'The Ring' is certainly up there pretty high on my list. If I had a type 5 it would be there for sure!
ReplyDeleteGreat job.
Ya know.....I've never seen 'The Shining'
ReplyDelete...awaiting my lumps.
Jeff... my god I hae you right now. First of all, The Shining is both a tour de force for Jack Nicholoson & Stanley Kubrick... people argue that it is both of their best efforts. Second of all, how the fuck have you never seen The Shining??? Its on TV all the fucking time... and its like 30 years old. Behind much? Third, I hate you for the gaps that you have in your filmography!!!!! First Tron, now this... Get this shit on your que NOW!!!!
ReplyDelete'Seven', in my opinion, isn't a horror movie. The same way 'The Silence of the Lambs' isn't a horror movie. They're definitely creepy, definitely horrific, but I always a feel a true horror movie has some superhuman or supernatural element that takes it beyond a truly disturbing crime story (which those two movies are, as is 'Psycho', 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre', and countless other scary movies that are considered horror.) Maybe I'm wrong, I don't know. I DO think these movies are scarier than something with a supernatural element, because in the realm of humanity, the severity and destruction portrayed and perpetrated by the characters in these movies can... and unfortunately sometimes DO... occur. Now THAT'S scary!
ReplyDelete'The Shining'... eh. While I think it looks amazing (as most of Kubrick's work does), and Nicholson gives such a great over-the-top performance, it's always been more of a psychological thriller. Omitted from the movie were the ghosts and hauntings ever present in the book in lieu of Jack Torrence's mental breakdown and subsequent hallucinations. Which is perfect for a Kubrick movie, but not as satisfying once you've read the book (which is phenomenal!)
But Brianna, you're right about the twins... and the corpse in the bathtub... and the guys in doggie costumes blowing each other... and the flood of blood. But the terrible child actor and the always-annoying Shelley Duvall really ruin a lot of that movie's impact for me.
Just sayin'.
I can see your point on Se7en and Silence, but not on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Texas Chainsaw is most definetly horror. While you make good points, it was "Your 3 favorite SCARY movies of all time". If they found it terrifying and scary, so be it. Just look at Joe Esq list... lol!!!
ReplyDeleteOn the topic of The Shining, thats some horror shit right there. Murder, possesion, elevators gushing blood, ghosts, talking fingers, aforementioned corpses & dog suit blowjobs... not to mentiion Shelley Duvall's utter abomination of a face... thats all some really scary shit, and its horror in my book!!!! LOL... love you guys. Keep the comments coming!!!!
" not to mentiion Shelley Duvall's utter abomination of a face... "
ReplyDeleteHAHAHAHAHA! SCARY INDEED!!!
Don't feel bad Jeff, I still have not seen the Shining or Tron!
ReplyDeleteJoe, you have just joined Jeff on the list of people I hate... sorry, but this is unacceptable considering some of the shit movies I know you guys have watched. Un-ACC-EPT-ABLE!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteA controversial year-old post...still causing quite a spooky buzz I see.
