DVD Release for Tuesday March 9, 2010

This weeks DVD releases are spearheaded by a couple of Oscar nominated films. Usually the Oscar nominees release to home video before the awards, but this year two of the biggest nominees are opting for a later release date.

Up In The Air - (George Clooney, Vera Farmiga, Anna Kendricks, Jason Bateman)

Jason Reitman is gettng really good at this film making stuff. Being that he comes from good stock (Ivan Reitman is his pops), this shouldn't be suprising... but what gets me is just how FAST he is becoming so good. Up In The Air is a wonderful film that works on every level. The cast is wonderful, from star George Clooney giving his usuall clutch performance to Danny McBride making a cameo as a groom with second thoughts. Even though the film is based on the sad topic of firing people from their jobs, Reitman does an excellent job of making you simpathetic to the people doing the firing. He also used recently let go employee's to lend to the films credibility. All in all, a great flick that you will want to watch over and over again. Must see of the season.

Precious - (Gabourey Sidibey, Mo'Nique, Mariah Carey)

This was supposed to be a feel good movie... but this is one of those feel good movies that feels good because its over. Not that the film is bad, but the material is so dark and deranged that you can't even watch. Thats what I keep hearing people say about Precious. Based on a true story about a abused teenager who is severly overweight and abused by her family, this movie has taken the award shows by storm. Comedian Mo'Nique, often known for her quck wit and funny movies, takes on a much grimmier role of a drug addicted mother who physically assaults her obese daughter constantly. Gabourey Sidibey was not even an actor when she got the job as Precious... she was a college student just looking to make some extra cash. Next thing you know, she is nominated for a best actress Academy Award and the rest is history. I have a theory about movies like this: What them once for the chance to experience the film for yourself, but then never watch it again. Movies like Passion Of The Christ fall into this category for me. Great flicks, just tough to watch again. You should give it a shot, but maybe a rental would be better. Congrats to Mo'Nique for winning the Oscar!!!

Also Being Released: Boondock Saints 2: All Saints Day, Old Dogs, Planet 51(animated)
