OkOkOkOkOkOkOk.......Muppets.
It's time to get things started.
By now you've seen the sneaky little teaser for the new Muppet movie. If not...
I tell ya, as much as I love living in the future, one of the real drawbacks is not getting surprised. As much as I love this trailer, I watched it knowing the Muppets were going to show up. I can just imagine myself as a kid, pre-interwebs, sitting in a theater and that thing coming on and totally catching me off guard. Would have blown my monkeylovin mind.
Blah blah blah I'm old and everything is terrible now, ANYWAY. It's a very cute and fun little campaign they have going on (there's a
Facebook) and I'm sure a good number of less nerdy people were well surprised.

Can you spot the hidden Kermit? |
So I've watched the trailer about 486 times now, combing it for hidden Easter eggs and the like (I have NO IDEA why I'm never surprised anymore) and here's what I came up with...

If I had a teacher like Amy Adams maybe I.......eh...still wouldn't have cared. |
Amy Adams is apparently teaching an elementary school class on auto repair. Specifically auto repair of the classic Morris Minor........reasonable. The full sized classic car in her classroom is reminiscent of many vehicles from the classic trilogy, most notably perhaps the one sold by Milton Berle for $11.95.
I am sooooo stoked for this it's not even funny. Actually it is funny.
ReplyDeleteOne correction though: Thog isn't a new Muppet at all!

There he is front and center at around 15 seconds in. Granted, before the movie he probably never had a name, and it's still cool that they're apparently going to let us hear from this always-seen-but-never-heard-from Muppet.
Thanks Rob...now I already know way too much!
ReplyDeletehaha j/k can't really spoil a Muppet movie. I'll see it 5 times anyway.
Great post!
Wait, so the Muppets really are going to be in this movie? I saw the news for the spoof trailer last night, but I didn't think it was for real! I am so excited now! I love the Muppets- definitely a classic that needs to make a comeback.

I do rememebr Thog from the old Muppet Show. He featured in several skits. I specifically remember one where he's like Godzilla sized crushing a city or something. I guess I meant new in that the puppet itself has been drastically redesigned. The old one was one of very few that was not capable of emoting much. He had the "dead eyes." A production blog featured the rebirth of Thog and noted it is a highlight of the film. Can't wait.
ReplyDeleteGreat article, Rob.
ReplyDeleteAnd don't overlook 'Muppets From Space'... it's really good and really funny.
Amanda's cousin (by marriage) is Frank Oz's protege. Frank Oz has given up the day to day Muppet stuff ('Sesame Street' etc), but I thought he was still doing the major stuff (like movies). I guess he doesn't even do that now, as this guy Eric Jacobson is now performing all of Oz's characters. Kinda disappointing, but, whattaya gonna do?
The cameo list in this thing is ridiculous, too. I think it's gonna be pretty fun.
I will have to give "Muppets From Space" another go round. I admittedly haven't seen it since it came out in '99.
ReplyDeleteFrank's always been a little wishy washy about being a puppeteer. He always saw it as a means to get to some other position, which he obviously has done. His puppeteer work has been very sparse over the lat 10 years.
I've also heard him publicly say that he felt there was such a void left when Jim died in regards to his characters. They were so closely associated and he didn't want that kind of void left for the characters he performed. That the characters should exist on their own, not be the person who operates them. I guess he felt a brand new reboot of the franchise was the perfect opportunity to fully step down. Makes sens I suppose. It's a very physical job too and he is getting up there.
